VW Golf MK1 GTI

Beside the MK2 I also build this Fujimi MK1 GTI.

I really love the MK1 and for me it's still the best Golf ever build.

The original wheels are not cool, so I had to find some new wheels. I came across these Porsche C2 wheels. From some spare 1:18 tyres I made new tyres for these wheels. I only need to repaint the wheels.

The body will be painted Mars Red by VW. An original Mk1 color

Re: VW Golf MK1 GTI

New update:

I started with the body. First I sanded all moldlines. After this I scribed out the panellines. The roof window was very bad, so used some putty to remove it. Unfortunatelly there was still something visible after several sanding sessions. I repeated this step a few times till it was enough for me. A little mark was still visible but with some extra layers of primer it should be ok i thought.

So I primered the body with Zero grey Primer.

And painted it in Mars Red:

I only added a simple decal on the back, and some layers of Zero 2K clear where next.

I painted the wheels in primer, gloss black and polished aluminium by Aclad. The shine is not really there, but I still love the result. They look cool with the red body. I finished the wheels with 3D logos.

Re: VW Golf MK1 GTI

Mk1 Golf's have always been my favourite generation, and this is looking excellent.

One point though, the wheels are 5 stud, so unless you've done an engine and running gear swap they should be 4 stud, still doesn't take away from the fabulous build you're doing Kris.

Ever seen these wheels on real VW's? They are all 5 stud and are fitted with adapters/spacers.

Re: VW Golf MK1 GTI

Well I haven't done much on this one because I wasn't happy with the paint results. There was a ghostline visible from the roof window that I puttied. There was also a little orange peel.

So I could restart it or I could try to polish the paint. I did the last option and started with micromesh 2400 grid to sand the whole body. Especially the roof, cause the ghostline was a little bit raised. After it was all smooth I polished it more with the micromesh pads untill I reached the 12000 grid. After this I used some car wax, and tamiya polishing wax. The shine was good for me and the roof window isn't visible anymore

After this I masked the body to paint the gti stripes and the thin stripes on both sides.

The windowtrims are painted by hand cause it was to much work to mask them.

And a dryfit with the wheels, bumpers and grille.

Hopefully i have some spare time this week to paint the chassis and start on the interior....

Kris.

Just cut them into pieces that fitt around the wheels and glue them together. That's the easiest way....

Re: VW Golf MK1 GTI

The interior is completed. I painted it just grey and black. I used some Porsche seats, a sport steeringwheel, grey interiorflocking and some interiorjunk.

On to the body.

I glued the windows, bumpers and grille in place. The VW badge is PE. I also added the wipers and mirrors. I don't like the side markers at all, but it's too late to solve it.

A photoshoot will be next

Kris.

Kris.
Yeah, 5 stud conversions are pretty common, addatpers or even actual brake roter/wheel hub conversions.
