1997 Bravada Brake Problem ABS?????

I have a 1997 Bravada that set idle for about 6 months. I put it back on the road and the ABS light came on , went out and came back on and has been on every since.
I don't know if this my problem or not.
Two times in the last couple months while moving slow and applying brake it is though you were stepping on a rock. The brake would not apply.
This happened the second time yesterday. Same as before moving very slow. By luck I did not hit anything.
When it happened the first time I thought the pedal had caught on something keeping it from engaging. Could not find anything. Now I am wondering if it has something to do with the ABS light being on.
I would really appreciate it if someone could give me an idea what is going on. The truck is dangerous to drive like it is.
Thanks in advance.

Because the brakes have to work every time with no failures, it deserves special consideration.
Your Bravada needs to be scanned with an ABS capable scan tool.
You might check on one at a chain type auto parts store.
Any general automotive shop or brake shop can scan it for you but there will likely be a charge.

Re: 1997 Bravada Brake Problem ABS?????

I had the Abs system checked today. The left front sensor is open. Hopefully I can get it fixed about the middle of the months and hope that will fix my problem.

Your left wheel speed sensor/pickup is mounted on the left front hub,

The right front wheel speed sensor/pickup failed on mine. The cable was broken at one of the anchor tabs,

I'll check to see if they can be bought separate from the bearing hub.

Re: 1997 Bravada Brake Problem ABS?????

The ABS light is on in my 1992 right now but I'm not real concerned sense all it means is that the ABS system is being bypassed but that the power brakes should work normally, which they do on mine.

Your power brakes should work normally even if there is a failure in the ABS system.

When you say that "while moving slow and applying brake it is though you were stepping on a rock. The brake would not apply." did the pedal go to the floor or did it stop short of it's normal travel?

the '97 is an OBDII and you will need a scanner that will read abs codes. On the OBDI you can use the "paper clip" method to jumper the test port.

Re: 1997 Bravada Brake Problem ABS?????

Chris,
Are you sure about being able to change the abs sensor without changing the whole hub assembly. I was told I would have to change the whole assembly by the Chevrolet dealer a couple years ago( they work on Olds here now) and also by the mechanic that checked the system for me the other day.
I sure hope you are right. It would be a big difference with money of which I am short of.
I cannot do the work now myself because of age and weight.
Thanks again for everything.

Re: 1997 Bravada Brake Problem ABS?????

I'm sure....you can see the hub bolted in place with the rotor removed in the 1st pic.
My original hub did get noisy and I changed it out. It came with a new speed sensor.
About a year later the "new" speed sensor cable broke.
Since I'd kept the old hub & speed sensor wiring, I removed the new wiring and installed the old wiring.
I had to remove the brake rotor to get access then with an allen wrench (in the 1st pic), removed the sensor and installed the old.

Wait a minute, aren't you going to tell us what the fix was? "Everything is fine now" just doesn't cut it.
