'97 blazer pulls to the left under braking, bad under heavy braking. My mechanic (not a dealer) has completely ruled out typical brake issues, cyllinders, calipers, brake lines after extensive testing. Drivers side rotor gets substantially hotter than the passenger side indicating a problem. Only thing he can guess, is the abs module affecting the breaking balance from right to left on the front.
Anyone?? |

I have the same problem right now. I noticed that it started doing this right after I installed new brakes. I am suspecting a bad caliper somewhere. The fronts have the dual piston, so maybe one piston isn't working right. Let me know if you fix it, I don't plan on working on mine for a month or two.

I have put 2 new sets of calipers on in the last 6 months. Can't be a caliper. New brake lines installed also. Only other symptom is that when bleeding the brake lines after installing the callipers, the gravity bleed works fine on the drivers side, but not so well on the passenger side.

No engine codes that I'm aware of, but we'll check that for sure. No ABS light on the dash. Thanks for your thoughts

You mention that the gravity bleed doesn't work as well on the passenger side. Have you checked the brake line to make sure that it is not blocked in any way? I have seen sometimes that the rubber begins to break down internally, and this creates a blockage internally.

Yes. No blocks. New lines installed. Checked brake fluid at the caliper. RS, almost none bleeding. Checked at connection to metal line, same. Checked at output of the ABS module, same. Checked Drivers side at same points, all is ok. Raised front end, applied braking pressure, lots on drivers side, almost none on passenger side. ??? nothing imbetween the ABS controller and the caliper. ??? Any ideas short of spending $800 on a ABS module?

If you need one, then get the ABS unit at the junk yard. I got one for $100 when I was having problems with my ABS. Maybe something is either hung up inside unit or it is just clogged, maybe you can try and go on a rocky surface and slam on the brakes activating the abs. Did you try and take the right side line off at the ABS unit and seeing if the fluid comes out there when you push on the brake pedal?

Yes, checked both front lines at the ABS. Ample fluid on LHS (drivers) but very little on passengers.

Then it sounds like there is either a clog, air, or something inside the unit is not sitting right. I would bleed that one line at the ABS unit really good, if that don't work then slam on the brakes on a rocky road to allow the ABS to activate fully. If that don't do it, then sounds like there is no other choice but to change the unit.
