a/c compressor oil and orifice tube
I am about to put a used a/c compressor on my 91 PA. The label states 236ml/8 oz of oil. So I kept it upside down above a measuring cup to see how much was still in it. Only 10 drops came out...
Figuring it would be empty I checked my old a/c compressor (which was working fine until the clutch broke into pieces) there was also no oil in it. This can't be cause it wasn't leaking oil and would have seized long ago without any. How do I know how much is in there or how to charge the correct amount? 2nd, I want to replace the orifice tube. There is a picture at Autozone but it doesn't look like what I have. They say it's in the outlet of the condenser beneath the clamp that holds the lines together. But with my PA, that's just aluminium lines covered with insulation. Do you have to cut the insulation? Or is it in that line just next to the battery? Is there some play in those lines, it doesn't seem that you can get the orifice tube out without loosening more refrigerant lines? |

Re: a/c compressor oil and orifice tube
The rule of thumb with A/C compressors is to add the same amount of oil that drained out if it is more than 2oz. If less than 2oz. drains out, add 2oz. When you remove your orifice tube, if it is dry, I would add 4oz. Never had any problems with oil overcharge. You should not have to cut anything to unscrew the 2 lines and remove the orifice.
![]() If it is not here (no. 2) it will be in the evaporator at the pther end of the evaporator tube. |

Thanks, this picture is exactly like my PA, this makes sense.

Re: a/c compressor oil and orifice tube
Just talked to my a/c guy and he asked whether there would be some kind of valves in this compressor preventing oil to come out?
Tried to unscrew the lines for the orifice tube, are these US sized bolts? They seem to be near metric size 26 and 29, I'm not sure those exist, haven't been able to find them yet. |

Re: a/c compressor oil and orifice tube
Some oil may be trapped because sometimes you have to hold ther compressor upside down and rotate the clutch to "pump" the oil out. I know this is impossible with your locked up compressor but it does indicate that some may be trapped. It won't be much. Did alot of oil drip out of the lines that bolt to the compressor? This will give some indication of how wet or dry the system is as will looking at the orifice tube. Wrench sizes 1-1/8" and 1-1/16" would be the closest standard sizes and should work as long as the fittings are not siezed. If the lines are dripping and the orifice is oily add 2-3oz of oil and if it seems dry add 4-5 oz. Not too little, not too much.

Re: a/c compressor oil and orifice tube
This afternoon I already put the compressor on the car, so at least it can be moved/driven now. It seems it will take a couple of weeks to get the right seals and orifice tube overhere.
The clutch of the "new" compressor seems to turn just fine now. The old one isn't seized, but the clutch plate broke off. I'll look for those wrenches and follow your advise concerning the oil. Thanks so far ! |
