Re: Scania 124 push axle with Curtainside trailer
Thanks for the recommendation about the glue applicator - I've found it in one of the catalogues over here in the UK (Hobby's), might have to give it a try...
Those mountings look really good - a great example of finding the basic shapes beneath, then building it up in stages to get a more complicated whole. It's funny how we don't necessarily think about 'sculpture' in our hobby - it's all about cutting and filing and drilling and gluing, isn't it? However, even on relatively small pieces such as these mountings you're having to create a three-dimensional shape - the difference is that we use filler and two-part putty, rather than stone or wood! Good stuff - looking forward to seeing more. SB |

Re: Scania 124 push axle with Curtainside trailer
I had made leaf springs earlier on this thread & shown them inside the swingarm bracket...well I since scrapped the early leaf springs & made new ones which look more presentable to the eye.
These are made from 2 strips of .040x.156(1.0x4.0mm) then on the inside I gave it a little schamffer on one edge then the schamffered edges placed together to give the leaf spring effect & inserted into tubing cut to 5mm lengths & smaller tubing inserted into the larger to pack it out & give it the look of the bushes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The box of the trailer is finished so I drilled 2 holes in the bottom so when I paint it I dont have to do it in stages,I can hold it & spray it in one. ![]() I started under the trailer on the cross braces that will be visible. I wasn't sure if I should paint the frame then apply these strips on the underbelly of the trailer but thought what the heck I'll just attach the strips & paint the underneath of the trailer as a whole! ![]() ![]() ![]() The measurements I used is 15mm from the rear to start then done 25mm intervals where the strips will be to a total of 22 strips on each side of the trailer. I still have to fit the side runners & side lights to the under of the trailer. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Scania 124 push axle with Curtainside trailer
I started making the mid-lift airbags for the truck,I used 7/16"(11.1mm) tubing for the airbag cut in 10mm lengths & at one end I capped it off with .015"(0.40mm) sheet (I think ,it was plasticard lying around so I used it) cut into the outer diameter of the tubing & cut smaller tubing of 8mm at lengths of 12mm to represent the inner part of the airbag.
Both ends schamfered but on one end it was given a bigger schamfer than the the other ![]() ![]() Then on the smaller pieces of tubing I used the same thickness sheet to make 2 more caps for the bottom but at the same diameter as the top parts. ![]() Once the glue had set I used good ol plastic putty on the bottom of the smaller tubing & sanded them down to give a beveled look of the inside of the airbags. ![]() ![]() Once the putty was dry I sanded smooth to give a nice finish once painted ,heres the before & after sanding. ![]() ![]() Back to the top or airbag part, I raided my scrap tin & tray of off cuts to get a square tube to make my mounting brackets for the top of the airbags. These were cut just under 45degrees & about 2mm in on the top then added a couple of bits of hex rod for bolts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then added on top of the larger capped tubing like so. ![]() ![]() Heres the end effect & placed next to the kit part they are pretty close in comparison but will be on the lift axle of course. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Once I had all these parts completed I started the adding the leaf springs to the hanger brackets & the result is this. ![]()

Re: Scania 124 push axle with Curtainside trailer
Thanks for the comments guys always appreciated.
Im working on the side bump bars on the trailer. I marked out the positions where they will go,I was gonna use 3 square bars coming down from the frame but it looked a bit cramped so I went with only 2. I used 0.100x0.100(2.5x2.5mm) for these parts. ![]() ![]() Once these were installed I started working on the rails themselves. I was after something a big chunky but didn't have anything up to do the job in my stash of bits so I went with joining two pieces of .040x.250(1.0x6.3mm)together to get the acquired thickness i'm after which gives me a thickness of 2mm.Then I cut them to lengths of 110mm & added a srtip of .100x.100 to one end & leave the other end open. ![]() ![]() Then placed in the appropriate position on the strips I attached earlier,I just used reference pictures to get the best position possible. ![]() ![]() ![]() I started working on the mudguards but wondered how I will attach them to the trailer & thought by cutting small pieces of channel .080(2.0mm) at 15mm lengths then use tubing that will fit 1.2mm rod inside cut to 3mm lengths & inserted on the ends of the channel. I'm doing this because I can get the mudguards more square then individual tubing by itself & still looks ok once finished. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I attached each strip of channel with the tubing on the mudguard up about 5mm from the bottom edge of the mudguard. ![]() ![]() I attached these strips using a cool C/A applicator I picked up at a hobbyshow this year which is made by Flex-i-file,its mainly or best used for applying small drops of superglue or C/A to kits then applying P/E parts to model where required. My old way was to use a toothpick but would make a mess so I seen this tool & wow its great. Just make a wee pool of C/A glue somewhere then dip the tool in it,the small fork like end picks up just enough to apply with no mess. ![]() ![]() Once the channel strips are in place they are ready to be fit to the trailer then all I have to do is trim the plastic coated wire to the desired length.
