alternator removal

My son and I are trying to change the alternator on his wife's 1999 Avenger with the 2.5 liter six. He has the alternator loose but we cannot get the thing physically out of the car. Are there any secrets we need to know? Do you have to remove the timing belt cover? He has removed everything that the Haynes manual says to remove.

Re: alternator removal

are you trying to get it from the top? Unless you remove the upper intake plenum, and remove all the necessary brackets, it's not coming out.

Re: alternator removal

We've tried from the top and the bottom. We have taken the intake plenum and all the brackets off. It won't fit between the engine and the frame from the top. From the bottom it hits the cv boot and a post that is attached to the engine block for support of the alternator mounting bracket. Can't see how to remove that post. If we could get that off the alternator would come out the bottom.

Re: alternator removal

I did the alternator in my son's 2000 Avenger 2.5 a couple of years ago. There was no easy way to get it out. It finally came out through the top, but only after turning and twisting it and finally hitting just the right angle by accident. Good luck and mind your language if there's kids around!
