2005 Uplander Headlights not working right

Whenever it gets cold the automatic feature for the headlights to come on works intermittently. So now when I turn on the headlights manually the headlights work, the dash lights work but the needles for the gauges do not light up. But when I shut it off and open the door they light up like they are suppose to. It only happens when it is cold out. There doesn't have to be snow. It must work with the circuit that tells the lights to come on. Don't know if there is ice gathering in a connection or if it is completely tempeture related. The dealer always thought I was nuts. Now it is out of warranty and it seems to be getting worse. Any help at all would be appreciated.
