I ALWAYS use the parking brake. Pennsylvania isn't exactly flat (VideoNasty can back me on this). I wasn't allowed to drive unless I used the parking brake (which has always been a foot brake) when learning in any of our automatics.

Parking brake became a little bit more urgent when I bought Sophie b/c you really do need to hold that standard in place. Oh, and especially now (at school) when I'm doing a lot of parallel parking, I always turn my wheels into the curb accordingly. Not to mention that I almost always leave my car in 1st. My dad kept leaving it in first, so it'd jump, but once I figured out why he did it, the habit stuck.

As for starting on an uphill slope... My dad actually taught me to use the handbrake first. Then I learned where the release point was and I don't really drift at all. But I will say that I can cheat and use the e-brake when I feel like being lazy.

Side note: Higgimonster: What is up w/your Saab??? Our 1991 9000 will start in first gear or neutral... It's actually much more of a pain to bother with reverse b/c of the lifting of the gear shift knob to even get it into reverse.

All 900's (I thought 9000's too, but maybe not), you can't take the key out unless the car is in reverse (standard shift cars only).

My bad on the whole Saab issue... but I just remembered that our Saab has a particularly lovely issue... the ignition is NOT the original. This means that we have one key for the doors and one for the ignition. That might just be why our key can be removed in any gear.

But, for example, my G20 has the infamous Nissan button to remove the key, so who knows what else is wrong w/our lovely Saab...

conincidence?

my sisters Primera, Dads Terrano and my Skyline also have that same button.

Which I feel is a good safety feature as I have seen what can happen when the key gets removed at speed (what a mess)
