Do you use your parking brake?

Well, do you use your parking brake? (Or for you non-spelling AFers, "Due U u'se u're parkin break?" ) This is coming to mind because a while ago some woman left her car in our office parking lot, and it 'popped out of gear' and rolled, hitting the sales manager's new Pontiac.

That's what I'm trying to figure out! For some reason, every time I've had a car in the shop (whether it's getting a new hood or a new water pump), I go to pick the car up and some idiot tech has parked it without the brake on!!! This even happened back when I didn't have a slushbox.

I have a theory here: I think the same people who don't use their parking brake are the same ones who don't wear their seatbelts either.

If I'm going far away from my car, then yes.

I don't use mine... but thats because its broken... something on the caliper is sticking or something, I don't remember what exactly...

I just leave it in first gear, I'm sure eventually it will "pop out of gear", but I don't plan on having the car too much longer, so hopefully it wont happen to me *knocks on wood*

matter of fact, mine isn't on right now. It's out in my drive way in 1st gear, no e-brake.
If I lived on a hill or something, then I would use it.

Theres a very good and rational explanition for that, and the tech was not being an idiot. If you ever work in a Garage then you will get to move a lot of cars around, especialy inside the work shop, and if its a busy place, out side. There is nothing worse than trying to push a car back to make room, or align a car on the hoist, or jack it up and check the suspension and wheel bearings when the fucking hand brake is on.
It means extra work getting into the car, often through a gap that is way to small! (ever noticed how cramed into tight spaces many cars are in workshops. Or how close together the posts on a hoist are?).
So you save your self time, and the customers car dents in the door by habbitualy leaving the hand brake off, unless the car is being parked on an uneven surface.

So please in the future think about why the tech might have left the hand brake off, just because someone fixes cars for a living dosnt mean thier an idiot or in anyway stupid.

Other wise, I use my Hand brake all the time. Its very effective at stopping my car rolling down the drive, and comes in usefull when I need to make a very fast 180 degree turn.

i used to use my handbrake all the time when parking, along with putting the car into reverse (in a Saab you have to put it in reverse to take the key out). but last winter my handbrake began to stick and one morning after a snow i didn't realize the rear wheels were locked until i turned out of my driveway and the car spun right around

the next day i unhooked the e-brake and looked at the mechanism and saw how it froze. too bad i forgot to put the cable back on. since then the car has had no e-brake and ihave had to park accordingly.

one time io parked on this really steep hill and left the car in first gear. as i got out of the car i noticed it start to roll backwards. Thus the engine was turning backwards. i had to park a 1/2 mile away just cause i had no e-brake
