heep...

Sea Cucumber - if they're dried and preserved with licorice - you can then add them to soup. A pile of my mates had it with abalone at my 30th - they kind of have a gelatinous texture to go with the rubbery texture of the abalone.

Jellyfish - yep - this was lightly pickled and served as a part of an entree platter with a sprinkling of sesame seeds - it's quite nice.

100 year old eggs - okay this IS an acquired taste - try working in the Orient for a while... they go well with slivers of pickled ginger and rice gruel. (yep I really did spend a while there to get a taste for it - actually the last place I had it was in Chinatown in London, England)...

replicant_008 Sounds like you have taste for unusual and exotic foods, and are rather well traveled.

Yes - will try most things at least once (unless I have a moral or ethical reason not to eg I don't like animal fur, wouldn't eat whale and definitely won't eat tuna...)

And yes I have travelled... a lot. Kiwis tend to travel a lot, we're the last shop at the end of a long road (people only visit us because we offer something special) so we're usually fascinated by the rest of the world... and because my friends are scattered by the four winds to many corners of the globe...

You don't say!
That would be why my brother has been in NZ only twice in last 4 years, and why Im trying to get my British passport before I graduate. :finger:

I think theres some silly statistic that shows we have one of the highest rates of over seas travel per head of population in the world, certianly way above the US.

And I don't have a problem with eating Tuna, I just make sure its got the dolphin safe logo thing on the side, then I can be pretty sure it was caught usieng dolphine friendly methods. And if I stopped eating fish I would probobly starve.

No problem with fish (I love fish and shellfish) - just not Tuna. Partly the dolphin thing but mainly because they are a pelagic species (ie it roams the oceans) and is being fished way, way beyond a sustainable catch because it's caught in places that don't fall into the protected fishing zone of countries which limit allowable catch quotas.

Along with the Antarctic Toothfish it represents a major problem with over-fishing which will have major implications on the food chain.

I've been to places that have devastated their fisheries either by overfishing or pollution and seen what it does to the people who can ill afford this - the poor and the disadvantaged who rely on fish for subsistence/food source... it's not good...

It is sad that in todays PRE-PACKAGED PRE-WRAPPED socieity that people get defensive and even squeemish about things like this.

The only difference between this and the roast lamb you may have had for dinner is that you didn't have to do the "hard yards" yourself, you just buy it pre-killed and packaged in non biodegradable polystyrene and plastic packaging.

As for those that would use the arguement that rabbits are cute furry pets and only see lambs as food. These rabbits were (as stated before) bred specifically for food NOT AS PETS.

Ahh, but I can be both, a Kiwi by Birth, and on paper, and thanks to some friendly laws in the UK, a Brit, and more importantly a member of the EU on paper.

rep.. I didnt realise Tuna was that over fished, but it makes sense as like you said its not a species that can be easily controlled by quote's etc.

Oh well Samlon tastes better anyway.
