Who has had their RM since new?

I live in Colorado Springs and was surprised when I moved here in 98 that there weren't too many Roadmasters to be seen. They are still fairly common to see in Chicago which is where I lived when I bought mine new in June 92.

My first car ever when I was 18 was a black 1950 RM 4 door which got a lot of attention from all my buddies who were driving Mercs and Fords with tri carbs etc. They just couldn't get over the straight 8 and the fact that the car was pretty quick.

Growing up on Buicks I was disappointed when the big ones went away for a spell. As a businessman, I needed a bigger car because I was on the road or taking clients to lunch or dinner. In the 80's, a van just didn't cut it too well.

Although I wasn't really fond of Cadillac, I had a few of those (Brougham) and learned they were put together pretty cheaply. When my 88 started leaking at the windshield, that was the last straw since I had a series of defects crop up since I bought it new. I drove into the local Buick dealer and asked if he had any RM's, and he did. A nice deep blue(black Sapphire) Ltd and we made a deal that evening.

Although I've had a couple little bugs with the car, it has been a great one and sure out rides tthe Caddies I had. With 67,000 miles on it, it's still going strong.

Re: Who has had their RM since new?

I've wanted a RM since they came back out with them back in 1991. My mother had wanted a new car, a Buick and had her heart set on the LeSabre. I tried to convince her to wait a year until the RM came out, but she didn't want to wait. Beside it would look funny with her driving it at 5'2" . It wasn't until 15 years later when by chance I came across another one. My neighbor's daughter was in the high school marching band and one of her friend's father owned a '95. My neighbor told me he was selling it because his daughter was too small to drive it. He was saving it for her when she turned 16, but it was too big for her.He sold it to me because they already had 2 other vehicles. As I look back I see that I lost my first opportunity at a RM because someone,(my mother) was too short, but later regained the opportunity to own one when another person was too short to drive it.. I am actually the 3rd owner. The first was an elderly gentleman who spent his winters in Florida, and his summers in NY. He ended up trading in the car at our local Cadillac dealer, where the guy I purchased the car from saw it and immediately bought it. It had a little over 128,000 miles on it and is in very good to excellent shape. Considering I only paid $1500 for it, I consider it a "steal".

Talking Re: Who has had their RM since new?

I have a '93 I bought new in Sept of '92. I just turned 64,000 miles this morning. So far, I've replaced the water pump, radiator, and the brakes at 60,000. I just replaced the ABS pump/valve assembly with one from the boneyard. It's still got the original exhaust system. Looks like the day I bought it. I'm on the third set of tires and need to get them replaced...all due to dry rot. The battery will be seven years old in Aug. I'll get a new one even if it still tests OK. I had trouble passing the emissions test (illinois) when I first got it, there was a service bulletin on a chip to correct the problem, so I had it done. The only change I noticed was that it would only smoke the tires for a half a block, where before it smoked 'em until you let up on the gas . The mileage in town is about 14.6 mpg, the best I got on the highway was 28.4 mpg. It's been a great car and I'd get rid of it, but there's nothing out there that compares to it that doesn't cost more than $50k! I hate front wheel drive so that doesn't leave much out there for except SUV's. I don't want another vehicle I have to wash with a ladder. This car has NEVER been through a car wash , always washed by hand. You could eat off the engine - really clean. I even still have the original carpet floor mats in a plastic bag - never used them . Rubber mats clean up so much easier. I never let the kids eat in the car, and the grandkids either ! Everyone asks me if I want to sell it, I was ready when the ABS went out, but now that it's fixed, I think I'll keep it a little longer. License plate RDMSTR4
