custom wheels project

well I can't find the rims I'm putting on my real car, so I am making some custom wheels.

so here's the wheels I want

here is what I found to be close enough that I can modify to match. they are from the R/M ITR kit.

these are the rims that had the right lip, luckily the lip is removable

so I made a mold of the lip

this is the original lip. I'm going to wait until all of my molds are made before I cast anything so I don't waste any resin (stuff's not cheap)

so here is the ITR rim after some extensive lathe work that I did using a drill, files, exacto blades, and sand paper.

here is the un finished wheel dummied up to check fitment...pretty good if I do say so myself

and last for your viewing pleasure this evening is the spoke section with tamiya quick cure putty drying on the center and around the edge to fill in the details from the ITR design.

if all goes well, I should have these rims ready for casting my tomorrow evening. wish me luck!!!

comments are VERY welcome

-Ken

P.S. for those of you who were waiting on my SR to be finished, it's back out on the table, but it isn't progressing very quickly, as the finished valve cover somehow ended up shaped like a taco shell. I think the glue I used had somehting to do with it, as it is much to small a part to distort from the heat of my storage unit.

Re: custom wheels project

well I think you may be in luck!!! once I finish the molds and whatnot, I plan on casting quite a few sets, and in different offsets too. this way front wheel drive cars can have some Cerumo Sport love too!!!! hahaha

oh, and the tires I'm using are from pegasus. they are just the tires without rims, I'll get the size up soon enough.

Re: custom wheels project

yeah, this little project has really gotten some creative juices flowing. I'm going to pace myself though. I need to finish a few before I go all crazy like that veilside fortune FD!!! (omg)

Re: custom wheels project

well, I finally got the project near completion, I'll be posting pics this evening, I hope.

the inside didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, but I'll likely be shaving that off in favor of the proper mounting method for the particular kit I mount them on anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

all I have left to do is wait for the mold to cure, and I'll be popping them out and putting them up on ebay, most likely. let me know if any of you are interested, and I'll give a huge A/F discount.

Re: custom wheels project

They look the business! I find wheels the hardest part to build or modifly. You've done a fantastic job!

Re: custom wheels project

thanks for the compliments! I have found it to be quite difficult to cast these rims. so far I have wasted about 1/2 of my resin and only have one set of the back sides of the rim that are somewhat useable. the spokes are just to small, and by the time the resin gets to the spokes it's started to get a bit thick already and won't flow through the mold. does anyone have suggestions to remedy this?

I tested with some corn syrup and it's pretty thick, and it flows right through easily enough, but the resin must have something against me. ugh, it's aggrivating.

oh and I don't even have ONE good lip, the way I made the mold just won't flow well enough to cast both at the same time. grrrr, (insert pic of angry man gritting teeth!)
