Angry *WIP* '66 Nova

Well, here is another one that is in the works. I bought the Rides Magazine "Custom Collection" 66 Nova with the idea to make it a pro-street car. To make a long story short and my job easier, this kit is already tubbed out. It comes with a lot of extras, but I think the overall quality sucks. There is a lot of excess plastic that had to be cut off of the body and some of the motor pieces. The hood didn't fit to well with the body. The list goes on... Maybe it was just a bad run - I will be buying another.

So here it is so far. I hope to get this thing done for the PS Contest but I won't hold myself to anything yet. We will have to see how the rest of the project goes.

Body Outside L.H.

Thanks for looking!

Re: *WIP* '66 Nova

Awesome paint job. Nice clean and crisp lines. Which block are you going to use in it?

Re: *WIP* '66 Nova

I think I am going to use the block from the '67 Pro Stret Chevelle model - I believe it is a 427. I am going to make it a nitros motor like the one I am using for my '49 Mercury project.

The engine in the Revell Pro Street 1967 Chevelle "Maxx Rat" kit is actually an earlier 396. You can tell this because of the narrow rounded valve covers.

For a more "big cube" approach, you can keep the 396 block (the 396, 427, and 454 blocks were all practically identical externally) but track down the cylinder heads and "square shoulder" rectangular valve covers of another big block Chevy kit.

If you're aiming for a more street oriented pro-streeter (show and go) then one of the best kits to get these sorts of parts from is actually any one of the AMT Tobias modified kits that were reissued by Model King ('36 Plymouth, '35 Chevy, Mustang, Gremlin). These have very nice (if slightly shallow) Mickey Thompson valve covers and broad Brodix style heads, as well as a great canted four barrel intake. Also good to consider, if you can find it, is the AMT/Ertl 1957 Chevy Bel Air Street Machine kit. It has a great GM Performance Parts style crate 454 that also has the square shouldered look you need.

For more of a race oriented (early to mid 90's NMCA Pro Street) pro streeter, I'd suggest either grabbing a Revell Pro Stock or one of the rarer Chevy Revell Pro Mods (1957 Soff Seal Chevy or 1955 Camaro Junction Chevy). These have the Oldsmobile based racing heads more commonly found on drag racing big block Chevy's as milled by Dart.

Trust me, it doesn't seem like a lot but changing over the cylinder heads and valve cover will increase the accuracy and race appearance of your big block ten-fold. Once you see the flatter, "square shoulder" valve covers and cylinder heads and compare them to the 396ci heads and covers, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Re: *WIP* '66 Nova

Well, a few things have come up since I had started this model along with the Pro-Stock contest. My wife and I found out that we are going to be having our 2nd child. I went through a job change. A lot more too, but there is no need to post it all here. I am going to be pulling my '49 Merc out of the contest and will be entering the Nova in it's place. I think I will be able to get the Nova done faster than the Merc. I will be using the motor out of the Merc. along with the NOS bottles for the Nova. Here are some pics from the Merc. I have progress pics back in the Merc. thread if anyone wants/needs to see them.
