Talking WIP - Drag Car Contest '49 Mercury

I had planned to enter either my S-10 or a Honda project that I am working on, but I changed my mind and decided to give the '49 Merc. a shot. Here are some progress pics of this so far. The only thing that I am going to be using from the kit is the body. I will be scratchbuilding the chassis. I have included a few pics of the chassis that I am modeling first in SolidWorks. Here we go....

Re: WIP - Drag Car Contest '49 Mercury

Thanks for the comments. The color is Tamiya TS-50, Mica Blue over gray primer. Nothing special. This was my first time using Tamiya spray paint and I am very pleased with the results. I will post some motor progress pics later on tonight.

Updates

Here are a few pictures of the engine I plan to use. It is going to be a NOS motor. Well, as of now anyway. Pic #4 shows one of the NOS solenoids that I made. Sorry the pictures are dark, the lighting in the room is not the worlds best, and the flash is too strong. Good enough for now I guess.

Another Update

Well, here are some more update pics. Before I post them, I will answer the question from honda_racing101.

The braided lines that I make are very simple and cheap. I was browsing around Hobby Lobby and came across some metallic silver string. I think I got a few hundred yards for less than $5.00. I determine what length and shape of line I am going to need, and then cut it. I coat both ends of the string with super glue. If any areas are to be curved or bent, these parts are also coated with glue and held in place while it drys. This also prevents the ends f the string from fraying. Then I just paint a small ring on each end with Tamiya X-23 Clear Blue for the first ring and then X-27 Clear Red for the other. Glue in place and you are done.

Re: WIP - Drag Car Contest '49 Mercury

3 coats of paint, not polished or cleared yet. I am very pleased with the Tamiya paint that I used. I didn't expect such a good finish from a spray can.

More Progress

Well, here are a few more progress pics. I am currently working on the frame and chassis. I am aiming to have this part done by the end of the week. We will have to see how things go. Also, I changed my mind on the NOS tank. I am going to have 2, and have decided to color match the tanks to the body. Let me know what you think so far.

More NOS Tanks

I still have tons more to do, but thanks for looking.

Re: WIP - Drag Car Contest '49 Mercury

just curious on the wheel wells. shouldn't they be hollowed out so the axle will pass through?

Re: WIP - Drag Car Contest '49 Mercury

They are going to be cut out. I am currently using them to gauge the height of the rear end. I probably should have cut them out before painting, but I am not happy with the paint job. It is going to have to be redone. Did you ever find that braided string at Hobby Lobby?
