Water in the Cold Air Intake!?

Ok, I KNOW that this has come up numerous times, but I never bothered reading it cause I didnt have a cold air to worry about. However, I just bought a Type R and the guy has an AEM Cold Air in it. Should I get a filter so water doesnt cause any waterlock of the engine? Anyone know if its likely to happen? Maybe just take the intake off during the winter? Any advice would be appreciated.

You will have no problems with the CAI and water, unless you drive straight through 3 feet of water. The fender well is 99% of the time dry, even when it rains. The only reason you would want to get the bypass filter is so you can drive through deep water, but again how often do we do that. So there are my $0.02. Good luck and have fun with your Type R. 3ft of water? thats up to your windows i would say more like 1.5 feet

i would suggest getting the aem bypass valve. it is only $40 and it can save your engine. you dont drive through a foot of water regularly but lets say youre caught in a flash flood (im from tx) then youre fuked. hydrolock.

Lol, great. Two different opinions. Im leaning on better safe than sorry, but one more quesiton...does the bypass valve make me lose the power gain from the intake?

1.5', 3' what ever. My point was that my CAI filter is about 1' up form the ground, so you don't need the by-pass unless you want it as a precutionary item. The only power you would loose is very minimal since you only loose a bit of aerodinamic flow. So it's up to you on what you spend your money on. Remember you can spend a lot of money in this game, so make wize choices. good luck. stefan525

Not on my car :o

I need the bypass valve because, like GSR, I am in the southwest where monsoons happen and we have no drains in the street (we rely upon evaporation for that :hehe: ). I'm looking to get some rubber tubing to replace the bypass valve for the other 10 1/2 moths though, where we get 0" of rain...
