Gas Gauge accuracy?
Hello All,
I recently purchased a 91 G20 with 80,000 miles (so I am new to the forum as well). It runs real strong and is in really good mechanical condition. Are there any known problems with the accuracy of the fuel gauge? I went about 50 miles and the car used just over a 1/4 tank. I have a 5.9 liter dodge pickup that doesn't even use that much gas for the same number of miles. Thanks !! Ryan B. |

I think I might change out the o2 sensor. I have read through many threads (after posting mine) and this seems to be a common problem.
Thanks for the reply! Ryan B. |

I've found in my driving experience that I can usually go about 115-125 miles with the fuel gauge ending up at just about the half way marker... I tend to believe that the gauge is a little bit oversensitive because today I filled up my tank with exactly 12 gallons of fuel with the needle touching E even though we are supposed to have 15+ gallon tanks. Maybe it serves as a safe guard for people who don't have a clue what gauges are for! :silly2:

Yup thats exactly right.
when the gauge is on "E" there is a good reserve in the tank. Just for shits...i decided to see how far down it would go..well i was surprised that thing kept goin and goin below E...finally the low fuel light came on (and its kinda dim). But i believe the FSM says the fuel light will come on a 2 gallons. So you really hafta ignore everything to run outta gas. Another thing that some peeps on here talked about a post on the fuel pumps is that they are cooled by the fuel in the tank. I believe many fuel pumps that ive seen are always cooled internally by the fuel. So for the life of the pump, you definatly dont want to run too low on the fuel.

Gas Gauge...
Agree, I think the fuel gauge is slightly inaccurate. My odometer reads 200+ miles for half a tank, but when I go fill-up - I only need to put in 5 gals. When the gauge reads a little less than 1/4 left, I have gone 300+ miles - but need to put in 10 gals. I do a lot of highway, but still...my gauge IS off.
hope that helps. _allstock_ |
