Rock Lights
I know that some of the MAXC members (Pika, Vikram for example) are running Rock Lights. Are they just cheap fog/driving lights located above the frame? Or are they an actual kit with lights, switch, relay, wiring, etc.? How much do they go for and where? And If I were to use cheap fog or driving lights would they have the same results or would the beam be too narrow? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx Ken

Have a look at http://www.4x4lo.com (mods section)
Vikram has a section for the rock lights. It mentions how he made them and were here bought them |

Thanx. Vikram had a great write up on the installation. Thanx a lot for the info. I think I'll be installing Rock Lights right after the tree wires this weekend (hopefully).

I just use my 4D cell Maglight when I need to see whats under me.
It's cheap, easy, and I can use it for things other than seeing whats under the Xterra.

If you wheel on rocks at night your spotters will be very grateful if you have rock lights

If you break something or hear a noise at night, you have an easier time locating/fixing the problem. Hehehe Try removing a skidplate at night by yourself while holding a flashlight..

Have your buddy hold the flashlight, besides its probably the rock light that got broke.
How are you guys damaging stuff behind the skid plate? This is a legitamate question because I was thinking of getting some, I just thought that the skids protected the components behind them. |

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time with these. If you have a spotlight and a maglite distributed to your spotters you'll be fine. I just see it as something else that could break.

The amount of light and the distribution of the light that well placed rock lights give off is incredible. I didn't think they would be worth a damn until I saw a truck with rock lights on the trail. For the cost, 30-40 bucks it is worth it IMO, expecially if it saves you from destroying something because your spotter couldn't see the rock on the other side of the truck because the rock on this side was casting a shadow and blocking the beam from the mag light.

I have a handful of extra lights and wiring (some parts gotten during ECXC, some I already had) in my shed right now. When it gets warm enough, I'm going to mount them underneath and wire them up ... it's all about hiding them from damage. |

Do like me...
Wal Mart sells a magnetic work lamp... 55w and bright as hell.
That way you only use it if you need it - slap it on the side of the truck... Oh...and it's $15. |

I'm sure they're very useful, but I've cracked alot of lenses on my vehicles, and would worry about something on the undercarrage. One thing to think about is brush and small shrubs. I doubt a rock could worm its way into a light without hitting somwthing else first. But the sagebrush here in Utah can be pretty bad on less used trails. My friend ABS wire ripped off once by a 2.5ft tall shrub growing in the middle of a trail. And it was protected by his lower control arm! Anything that stays under the vehicle needs to be well protected. Mobycat's idea of a magnetic light would be good enough for me. |
