Brake Light Switch

My brake light switch just went again for the second time in about 6 weeks. I have a 2003 Ford Escort ZX2, anyone know what would be causing this to go. I have only had the car for a little over 2 months so I would like to get this fixed as it seems like it is going to be a recurring problem. Its an easy change and only like 9 bucks or something but I would rather not spend the money.

Re: Brake Light Switch

Is the bad switch getting fried or does it just stop working?
Are you certain it is the switch and not a ground somewhere?
Have you tested the switch with an ohm meter to make sure it is actually bad?

Re: Brake Light Switch

I am thinking it may actually be just a bad connection. The plug that goes into the switch really does not connect very well. Maybe the switch is just getting loose after a while. Fortunately I have my old switches so I just need to test this out some day.

Re: Brake Light Switch

Probably all your switches are all right. The connection could make them appear to be faulty. Use the ohm scale on your tester and check for continuity with the brake light switch on.

Re: Brake Light Switch

Had reoccuring issues with my high-mount brake lamp bulb and door jam switches. Cleaned up the contacts for the brake lamp bulb then applied a little dielectric grease to help keep air off the parts. No air, no corrosion. This approach however was useless for the door-jam switches. For those, I ended up applying high quality silver bearing solder (from radioshack) to the contact surfaces. The solder won't corrode so problem solved.

The protective anti-corrosive plating on those contacts may be gone, or/and the metal alloy may be a defective blend. In such a case, the problem is going to be reoccuring. You'll have to figure some way of either actually repairing the problem, or replacing the defective contacts.
