My 98 grand prix is on 149,000 miles and I have only done basic things like brake pads, rotors, and oil changes. Nothing big has ever broken and I run my car hard. On the other hand my mom's old sentra sat in our driveway for about a year due to tranmission problems. That thing was a POS. I'm not saying all nissans are junk nor am I saying all pontiacs will last forever. I'm just sharing my experience which proves ur "point" (or statement without any back up information) utterly wrong.

in all honesty i own a maxima and am happy with the car and like most people said here to everyone their own tastes.
however, concerning the new grand prix i like the design and the comp g package is really intuitive with the tapshift but the only problem is that it's 4 speed if it were a 5 speed and if i had the money i would consider it...if only...

Re: nissan or grand prix

I don't really like the new grand prix that much. I like the 97-03's the best. The new one is cool in what is has and the power is pretty nice (260 hp forgot the torque). The tap shift is really cool too. i'd like to have one.

I own a 1995 pontiac gtp and i love smoking imports but i will admit ive been smoked by a few pesty imports too so i guess it simply comes down to taste and styling, any one can make a car go fast with the right parts and money just don't race a honda if your gonna buy import buy like an S2000 or supra not some civic or eclipse

I had that 24-valve 3.4L twin-cammer in my '95 GT. Really fun highway engine but what a pig on gas - by far the worst fuel economy of any normal car I've ever had (the Z takes the crown but really not by that much).

I have a 96 Grand Prix 110,000. Hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd if it does at all. (good thing has second gear start for snow) No display on the Radio, Volume sometimes does the opposite, doors very hard to open, broke one handle right off, Electronics for AC not working. I hot wired the relay - pump runs, Some plastic strip runs side to side in seat digs into your ass, replaced valve gaskets, 3 control knobs broke, Usual water pump went, Check engine light on half the time form air flow sensor. I still like the car?
My friend is has 15 years + as repair person whose dealership sells both. He said take the Nissan any day. I am very pro American but I think am going to switch. and If I am going to put a blower on somthing, I would like it to start out with 265HP not end up there.

i beg to differ that a maxima will last 200,000 and beat a gtp. my ex-friends 95 has only 95000 and the trans is broken already. and i have a 99 gt and raped him in a race. so you sir are definitly wrong.

Re: nissan or grand prix

We had an 81 Sentra once home. Many problems out of it. AL GM vehicles has lasted at leas 120kmiles without problems. The younger one is my 98 GTP that only has 80k+ miles on it and 3 engines(OEM blown due to sinking(literraly) and the second one broke at the track). The third one been broken in.
Some imports have great looks, but for the cost and features I stick to what america has to offer. So far they have been pretty reliable

Re: nissan or grand prix

you guys do realize that nobody has had the same technology every year they've built a car??? of course a 81 sentra is gonna suck...that was like one of the first years, if not the first year, it was made...most any car suckz da first year it was made, because that company had no experience with that car to make it the most reliable car out there! i got a 89 maxima SE 5spd wit 185K mi n it can walk all over my old 92 GP LE wit half that mileage (granted it was a LE, but it would still walk all over it) and of course the GP died which is why i have the maxima...either way i'd take the maxima over the GP n e day...cuz da max is more fun to drive

Re: nissan or grand prix

As you said regarding the first years. The 92 GP is one of the early W models. Does not compare to the 97-03 models we all love. I drive a 93 Z-34 with 190k on the odo and is good but not quite as good as the 98 GP. The 98 is better finished and handles a heck lot better. And it makes sense that your Maxima is more fun to drive, it is STD for crying out loud. I would really kill to have a 6speed GTP with a final gear ratio of 3.45. WOuld be awesome, but unreal

From what I've seen, they do not stand up to abuse or neglect as well.
Might want to rethink that. All of my cars to date have been japanese. They WILL outlast American cars period. Early models 70's n 80's had bad rust out issues. My 83 Corolla had 580,000 miles and finally sold it because it rusted away. Repairs: 1 alternator, and the usual stuff tires brakes and fluids on a regular basis. My wifes '97 just changed the plugs and brake job this year, 200,000 kms. (neglect i know) '95 Nissan King Cab 400,000 again the usual tires brakes... But what makes me smile everytime I get in it is my '98 GP GT. And as someone already said isn't that the point?
Test drive both and get the one tht you enjoy.

Well I have a 69 chevelle that had it's first body work to replace rusted out parts 3 years ago. The engine was rebuilt 10 years ago and the thing has close to 250k miles. Look into history and jap vehicles that originally came to these shores were based on american designs. Like the 69 boxy toyota that was based on a 42 chevrolet. You know that after the big jap companies american/european hands pull strings one way or the other. Subaru, Isuzu, Toyota all are part of the General's realm. Mazda is Ford territory and Nissan is under french direction(The guy is from Citroen or Peugeot). Honda is the only one on its own. It is the one I respect because have achieved all it's deed on it's own. And you are correct go buy whatever makes you happy but at the end of the day I am proud to be driving and own an american inspired and built machine.
