Question Re: D15B - VTEC??? WTF?

I was just on (http://www.jspecjdm.net/) where it said that there are D15B-VTEC's for sale. What the hell? Is that right? A D15B VTEC? Did anyone else hear of this before, or did I just make an ass out of myself???

Re: Re: D15B - VTEC??? WTF?

It is the 1.5L VTEC (not VTEC-e, but regular VTEC) out of the JDM Civic VTi. It makes 130hp and 111 ft/lb torque, and revs stock to 8000rpm. It's a great motor and realy cheap too. It has the PO8 head, which is essentially identical to the P28 head of the D16Z6, with the P28 cam in it. It really is the least heard of but one of the best SOHC motors, if not the best, because of its high revving design. I have installed several, and they run great in the 4th gens, and can easily outdo the Z6 due to being a little lighter and having a little bit more torque and hp. I don't have one, but I'm a big fan. I can get them delivered for $525 to most anywhere you want. Two thumbs up for a well designed Honda motor!

This is my JDM D15B VTEC.

All the part numbers on the head, intake manifold, and distributor match up to the D16Z6.
Only differences appear to be in the block... same bore as the Z6, but shorter stroke + smaller displacement.

Don't yet have it on the road... but hopefully by this weekend I can give some reviews on the power.

Re: Re: D15B - VTEC??? WTF?

Tha't carzy. The ones that I have installed all had PO8 stamped on the head and intake manifold, but had the P28 cam. I guess there are different versions out there. I was told that the PO8 head was designed to flow better than the Z6 head in order to get more power out of the little 1.5L beast. The ones that I have put in had a surprising amount of power. I'm sure you'll love it, especially up from 102hp...

Up from 92 actually + the direct port n2o injection kit I'm getting... why not turbo or supercharger? with gas prices rapidly aproaching $2.50 a gallon, I really can't afford to have the power all the time... power when I need it is just fine!

Boy, it's going to be strange though, going back to driving a Civic after driving my Camaro around for a year.

Re: Re: D15B - VTEC??? WTF?

Reason why people use this D15B Vtec 1.5l motor is because it has the 3 Stage Vtec. It adjusts in low rpms, mid rpms and high rpms. If you wanna know more check out this write up http://www.leecao.com/honda/vtec/3stagevtec.html

i did this swap and i think something is wrong. seems like the car barely wants to go over 100, to where my dx motor with 190k would do it just fine, i have a 95 vti motor, 90si tranny, 88si ecu, and a vafc2 im using NGK sparkplugs, i have a ACT stage3 clutch, intake, headers and stock exhaust. and it seems slower... slowboycivic any help with this?
i got beat by a si swap... with pretty much the same setup cept it was a safc and he has 2.5 exhaust with a racing muffler.

All 96 and later model VTEC equipted engines have this feature... but the 92-95 VTi engines that are being sold are not 3 stage vtec.

Is your vafc hooked up correctly? car running rich? did you break in the clutch before driving the car hard?

The d15b vtec does not rev to 8000 rpms in stock form, it revs to 7350 is you use the p08 ecu that was made for that engine. Also, it does not have a p28 cam in it, the cam profile for the d15b vtec engine is comparable to the zex 53900 cam. But, as far as the head, yes, it is basically a d16z6 head. However, the p08 ecu gives it a slightly more aggressive fuel and timing curve than the p28. Also, with it's 1.62 rod/stroke ratio, it is the best d-series motor for revving. The vx motor has the same r/s ratio, but it is nowhere near the 130ps or 128 hp that the d15b vtec produces.
