I know you said besides sandpaper, but 320 Grit works really well to scuff the paint up and strip a lot of it.

For striping metal:
Soak in acetone for about 20minutes-1hour and rub the paint with some steel wool, like an SOS pad.

If you have a dremel get a soft nickel wire wheel. It takes awhile but really strips the paint, also you may need a few wire wheels.

The Acetone and Steel Wool is probably one of the fastest ways to strip die casts.

Hardware store, HomeDepot, Lowes, and auto paint stores. Be careful not to get any acetone on plastic, it will melt it so fast. I can melt bumpers in seconds.

Try paint stripper from any hardware store or any place that sells paint. Just look near the spray paint.

Acetone has the same qualities as paint stripper, its just much stronger.

I would. The acetone loses its strength b/c the paint chemicals weaken. Also, acetone evaporates rather quickly, so I doubt there will be much acetone left after 45minutes. So when you close up your acetone, make sure the lid is on tight.

Acetone is cheap so its ok to get a new batch every time. You can buy a gallon of it for a couple bucks.
