Whoa, isn't that a too small of gauge even for a pure signal cable/wire? I like the CAT5 idea though, twisted pair, one single line to run.

nope cat5 will work fine for an RCA because the RCA cable isn't acctully carrying any power load. its just carrying the audio signal, once it gets back to the amp it gets bumped... and so on and so on....

JakeDrummer is right ....... signal cables carry 2-10 volts (depending on the headunit or processor) and maybe 100 mAmps or so. Usually less than a watt of RMS power. Youwant to make them small so when you twist them, they get real close together ---- THIS is what allows the noise rejection.

Re: Whining...its pissin me off

install ground loop isolator at the deck that will get rid of your whine you may also need one on the amp that is causing the whine. Isolators are like $13.00 at Wal-Mart. Easy fix. True you should have your power and rca cables ran on opposite sides of the car I have my 4gauge power ran underneath the car on the passenger side and my rca's on the drivers side and I still needed ground loop isolator.

Obviously, the "running it on the other side" thing didn't help you too much. You should try using UTP's. Be careful of cheap isolators that fit on the RCA lines - if the inductance is wrong, it will act as a high pass filter (it will cut your bass)

LOL That's my point exactly although the general rule is to run the rca's on the opposite side from the power wires it doesn't always help. Haven't used UTP's yet but will try them in the next system I do or when I decide to redo this one. Stinger makes a pretty good isolator I just suggest the Walmart one cause just about every city has a Walmart and it is a Schosche Brand which they are not that bad with their products.

this post finally hits me. u said eveything was fine for about three years but until 4-5 months ago right? so, my best advice is to double check your wiring and stereo component's placement. over the years thing can get loose or move around causing the noise.

this could be one of the solutions to the problem, there could be other problems that occurred during the years to cause this whining noise. ask any good stereo installer or dealer and they will tell to keep the signal wires and power wires away from each other. in most of these cases, noise can be illiminated through a proper installation, the only time i will ever consider getting a noise filter is when i ran out of ideas on what is causing it, also i wouldn't want to waste more money on something if i can cure the problem myself.

one thing no one has yet to ask , have you replaced your spark plug wires recently ? i put a set of sold core race wires on my car once and i starting getting noise in my system , i change the wire out for a set of spiral core wires and the noise stopped , just something to think about
