ultimate off road vehicle?

Well, I just went out on my first off roading experience in my friend's mom's pathfinder. It was just a large field with a couple hills here and there. But damn was it fun as hell. I was wondering what you guys all think is one of the better off roading vehicles (cheaper than a pathfinder ) I may be thinking about getting one in a few years after a I graduate.

Re: ultimate off road vehicle?

yeah. Definatly the older GM/Ford/Dodge's..

Ford was prbably best at rock crawling and all that articular stuff-with its soild i beam front end, dana 44, and the NP205 T-case... it was pretty bad ass.

Dont know too much on gm or dodge. I think the older dodges came with dana 60's!

Jeep Cherokees and older Jeep Wranglers will keep up, if not exceed, the capabiltites of a Pathfinder for about the same price. Plus aftermarket parts are very cheap and easy to find.

Re: ultimate off road vehicle?

Well, I have an FJ40 LandCruiser, which is a complete beast off road, just read magazine articles on them, also I've had mine through last chance canyon here so I can say it's very capable even stock. However, I'll go with the old Willy's flatfender

http://www.thecj2apage.com/

or the Mighty-Mite

http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/Mil/M422/MM03.html

on this one. They are much smaller than a LandCruiser or LandRover and they weigh a LOT less, especially a MightyMite, seeing as how they're made of aluminum. Less weight + small size + built extremely tough for the military = better off road capability, you aren't going to find many vehicles that beat them overall.

Re: ultimate off road vehicle?

I'd take an original army GP. Just a preferance really. I'd keep the shovel on it and the canvas seat covers too.

That's exactly what I would have said, but seeing as how he probably wont' find an H1 for less than a pathfinder, go with a 90's jeep and just put some 35's on it, maybe a lift, hell you could put together a beasty jeep together for 10K, and personally i'd drop a V8 in one.

Hey, you should just buy my Jeep then. If you don't mind doing some eletrical work and some mechanical bolt on parts for the engine. It's a '90 Wrangler with a 7" lift and 36" super swampers. Dropped in a 5.2L V8 from a '94 Grand Cherokee along with a manual tranny from a '99 Wrangler. The engine only has 25k miles on it. All yours for $2250. Here's a pic:
