help, I nerver get a response
I have a '92 maxima SE 5 speed and am having some problems. Computer was throwing a knock sensor (KS) code so I changed it w/ the spark plugs, fuel filter, and cleaned everything up real good. When I drove it again, it still hesitated and could feel the timing still retard, but not as bad. I also got an extra harness for 3rd gen maximas that is supposed to keep the KS from being too sensative. It works a little better with that but still not the same. Oh yea, I also bypassed the KS at one time and it drives really well w/o the KS being in line. The motor also pings when it is hot and even after it is off after driving it. I think that may be normal though. I think the KS might just be doing what it should and maybe the motor is getting hot in a spot and it is knocking. How do I fix this?

Re: help, I nerver get a response
So now I will just have to respond to myself. I think it may be an EGR problem. Have read some stuff on that since my initial post and if the valve is plugged or not going thru it will cause the combustion temp to be much higher and thus, knocking and pinging. Still the only code is from a knock sensor though, no faulty egr valve. Still looking for answers though.

First thing. I think most of guys have a Gen4 or newer, so there not as many minds driving the same model as you have. I had one for about 5 months before it was totalled. Anyway, bottom line is that is someone knew how to help, they would respond.
With that out of the way, I don't know how many miles that engine has but a "pinging" sound is never normal. If the valve is plugged as you indicated, it can cause that knocking and pinging. That may also mean that your oil is not circulating normally, thus the extra heat. DAMAGE ALERT!! I lost an engine in just the same way. There are additives you can use to help clean out the sludge. You basically pour it in with the oil, let the car run for about 10 minutes and then change the oil. It's kind of an oil laxative. When you car get older, regularity is a problem

Re: help, I nerver get a response
Here potna go to this board and sign up as a member and post your question:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=126113 They can help, they have many experts there and someone has had or knows someone with your problem, what to do and how to fix it. I hope this helps but it's just as mentioned before, hardly anyone here owns an early 90's Maxima, most of us here are a few 3rd gens, 4th gens, 5th gens and 5.5 gens. Good luck though.

Re: help, I nerver get a response
Thanks for the advice, oil laxative--nice way to put it! The car has 127,000 and runs well other than the hesitation. Does'nt burn oil and I cleaned out the EGR valve today but don't know if it helped much. Still pings, even a few minutes after I shut it off, no overheating ever.
I posted here because search doesn't work on the other forum and for some reason my name wasn't working on the other one. Thanks though |
