Hi, I have been looking at this 1992 VR4. It has 81,000 miles on it and it. He says "adult driven only." Also it says it has a clear title. These are some of the new things he has put into the car:
New Sycro New pressure plate New clutch New gears and gear box New shiney radiator ($700) 2 months ago Synthetic oil change every 3,000 miles 2nd owner New timing change New brakes New front wheel booths New tires (4 months old) "only driven from and to work" $6,500 (its on a auction so i think his asking price will be around $7k-8k) Can you guys help me some help and advice on getting this car..is there anything he might be hiding from me or is it just a perfect deal? what sould i look for when i go test drive it? how can i check if the turbos are in good condition? is 81,000 miles for a 1992 vr4 too much? and lastly, when do the engines start giving problems in the VR4s...will i be running to any obvious problems soon since? Thank You Very Much, Sam |

Thats actually really low miles for a 92. The usual things to look for in a test drive are how well it shifts - especially into second gear. The second gear synchro can be a evil little devil. I see you mentioned he replaced some (ask if he had the whole tranny replace or just rebuilt with some replacement parts) Either way should be fine but its good to find out.
You may hear some lifter tick. Its usually harmless especially if you can barely hear it. Look around and under the engine bay for oil seeps/leaks. Lastly. Make sure you do a carfax on the vin. You'll find any insurance claims made by either of the previous owners. The engines can go a long long time. My 94 has 107K and I've replaced nothing but normal tune up parts, tires and brakes. Runs like a champ. The 95 has 70K on it but I had to have the tranny replaced (that devil second synchro got me). Just be prepared for a fairly pricey insurance premium. Its a grand touring car with a sports car performance and insurance pricetag. Good luck.

Granted mitsus are infamous for their transmission "issues", I always look at cars with stuff like synchros and entire trannies being replaced... and ask myself, HOW was this car being driven?
I generally try to avoid buying cars that seem like they were driven really hard(which is impossible sometimes). Adds a lot of years onto them, which means I spend less time driving and more time fixing.
