94 Cutlass Supreme Engine light problems, Help!

Hey guys/gals,

I'm new to this forum and came accross it looking for answers to this question I have. I just bought my 94 Cutlass Supreme over the weekend and I have to say, so far I don't regreat my purchase. Great car, smooth ride, smooth shifting, descent power.

I have a couple of problems with it though. One, the front passenger power window doesn't work (no big deal for now with winter around the corner) and I've noticed if I reach speeds of 100 km/hr or more and slow down to get off the highway, when I de accelerate, my engine light comes on.. I was wondering if anyone knew what was triggering this. I'm no mechanic so any input would help. I'm guessing its a sensor or something is dirty (vacuum) or something.

thanks!

I have had the same thing. Two thing you could try Use 10w30 oil. And Reve your enegn while in park to clean out the cytalic converter.

Thanks madman,

So why would running different oil clean the cytalic converter? I'm not sure what they run for oil in the car right now since I just bought and I didn't ask what they were using either. I'll have to check. I did notice that the sticker says the oil was changed by the dealer so I could always call them for any info on the history of the car I guess. I could check under hood for stickers with details of oil they used for last oil change. Alot of mechanics will do that when changing oil.

Thanks for the reply and I'll post results if I see that there using 5w or 10w.

if your engine light comes on, it's throwing a trouble code, you need to scan it or have it scanned somewhere.

'94 should still be OBD1 .. not sure if the Cutlass got the godforsaken OBD1.5. Either way, try this: http://w-body.com/index2.html

Re: 94 Cutlass Supreme Engine light problems, Help!

If the SES light is coming on, the PCM has stored a trouble code...this will help with diagnosing what is happening.....
A SES light coming on during decelleration after highway driving is an indication of a plugged EGR passage.

Slywolf-i Was Having The Same Problem And Gmmerlin Was Correct It Was A Clogged Egr Passage. Cleaned Out The Passage And Haven't Had A Problem Since. You Need To Have Your Codes Scanned And That Will Point You In The Right Direction.

Re: 94 Cutlass Supreme Engine light problems, Help!

I have a 94 cutlass and my interior lights stay on. Mechanic informed me to take it to dealer as it is out of his league. I now have the fuse out. I hope I never drop anything in the car at night as I will have to wait until the morning to find it.

My 1st post, Hello all!

I have the same symptoms on a 94 cutlass (Service Engine Soon) light comes on after coming off the highway. Had the code read and it was EGR valve so I replaced it.

The light remains and after reading this thread (thanx to GMMerlin) I have learned it must be the passages.

I replaced the EGR valve myself, but I have no idea whats the best and safest way to thoroughly clean out all the passages. ANY help/instructions would be greatly appreciated.

cheers.

As for the lights I would suggest checking the door pins maybe one is open or bad and acts like it's open and leaving the lights on. I had the same problem..

Re: 94 Cutlass Supreme Engine light problems, Help!

I just got a 94 cutlass (my first car) and have the same problem, i took it to a mechanic i know that replaced the EGR valve but it kept going on so he flushed the system out, but it still keeps going on. What should i tell him to check?

And i have the same problem with my driverside window where to will stop working in the down position, a couple quick slams of the door seem to do the job, it's not a good solution but it gets the job done

haha i have the same problems , so did my dad. he got a new egr valve that fixed his problem, and i had to buy a new window motor for mine, we did the work ourselves and was pretty easy. The door was tough and you must be patient and have the right tools to do a good job.
