Should I buy this?

I already read DkShadow's and the comments about what I should check out since this car also has a bad clutch. I just want to know your opinions...

1991 240sx se
red
200k miles
needs a clutch
$1000

not sure if it's a hatch or coupe, but if it's in good condition then it doesn't matter I suppose...

first mods will be an ACT clutch, hognose bumper, spray-paint job (satin black or gloss black), and a kaaz LSD.

Any suggestions on what I should look for when I check out the car? What engine sounds I should watch for? Any comments on price? And lastly, any suggestions or comments on mods and what order I should do them in?

I've got a huge list of mods I want to do...but priority is something I really need...I've got some ideas of what I should get first, but new ideas are always welcome.

Hmm with 200k miles, try and haggle the price down a lil bit. With that many miles, you should probably consider a rebuilt if you plan on driving it hard.

i agree. that mileage is very high and maybe you could try talking him down a bit...but maybe not. it's ultimatley up to the seller.

check the frame and undersides for rust, interior for anything wrong, get him to start it and check everything you can think of, then check it again.

can i have your chouki bumper?

I did...and still do...but 5500 dollars is hard to get cleared on a loan...and I need to save more money to have a better down payment...I only want a 12 or 24 month loan with less than 80 dollar payments...probly like a 4000 down payment...so like a 1500-2500 dollar loan for a nice s14.

Also I want to get used to rwd handling and s13s are easy to come by. They are also pretty damn cheap...with the money I have I should be able to get an ACT clutch, lightened flywheel and have the trans checked out and still have a small amount left over for a down payment...so less than 1k should be easy to pay off in 12 months...then it's time to look for an s14 to complete my collection ...

I wonder if the clutch is in good enough condition where I could drive it home...I doubt it though...just if I get it to my house I could do most of the work myself and save a ton on labor.

I will try and talk him down though, but the price was listed as firm and if it's in great condition otherwise then I'll get it for 1000. It will have a spoiler so I expect to at the very least see some rust on the trunk...hopefully no where else...

Re: Should I buy this?

why does everyone think S14's are at least 5-6k??? I got mine for only $3,900, with 92k miles which isn't that much considering how reliable the KA is. No mine wasn't a junker, it was in perfect running condition, no exterior/interior damage, immaculate condition. Only one prob though, the seats have some lil holes from cigarette ash burns which isn't a big deal. It has that timing chain guide prob but all 240s do.

^ automatics sell higher and are worth more than manuals buddy

It's known and i checked blue book to make sure and using the exact same specs, my car is worth $3,950 manual and $4,300 automatic. As for SE yea it does sell for more, but I'd take the base b/c it weighs less and I don't really need abs or the white-faced SE guages. 5-lugs are nice but there are plenty of nice 4-lug rims out there.

sorry buddy, the part about autos being more valuable is not ture when it comes to 240sx'es. kbb isnt worth shit when it comes to our cars. who really wants to buy an auto?

lets take that question in general and answer is with "older people want automatics"

and considering the older people want auto, why in the hell would they want a 240sx? once youre older, you generally want something more luxiouios (sp?), bimmer, benz, audi...etc.

mynismo always tryed to make automatics sound high and mighty expensive, but in reality they really arent. most people (i bet over 80%) that wanna buy 240sx'es nowadays arent looking for automatics.

no need to flame this post about the petty little details, cause most of its pretty true.

I've already said I don't want an S14 unless it's an SE...I want the 5-lugs, small stock spoiler, foglights, slightly stiffer suspension, small rear anti-roll bar, and definitely the VLSD. Converting to 5 lugs alone would make your 3900 dollar car less than a 1000 difference between the 5500-6000 dollar SEs I've seen lately in great condition. Then factor in spending 40-150 for the factory fog lights probably, a few more bucks for an aftermarket spoiler and then a definitely a bit of coin for a Z32 VLSD (or Kaaz LSD) and with all of that money you've spent you've definitely spent more than 5500. And add to that the things you would still be missing that the SE has and all the labor you would have put into it when you could get it all done for you with a factory look since it is factory.

And I like the sunroofs that most SEs have...so to me a few added pounds and dollars are worth it...even if it weighs a small amount more...

And if you are into saving weight then why do you have an auto? I believe the base model auto is a similar weight to the SE manual...the SE still weighing in slightly more...but not noticeably.

BTW...Autos are cheaper when you look at 240s or other sporty cars (rx7, mr2, supra, 300zx, etc)...there is no two ways around it...the only people who want the autos are people willing to do a swap right after they get it or people who like autos. It takes money to convert all the parts over and make it a manual...if you want to factor in labor that a shop would charge you are looking to pay a lot more than a factory manual...so it decreases the price in most cases...I wouldn't buy an auto s14 unless it was under 3k...maybe even under 2.5k...

Autos cost more on a new car and book higher because it is an option...and they are more complicated than a manual...you pay for that supposedly advanced technology...I cringe to think anyone ever went to a lot and said I want that car (pointing at a 240sx) and then asking if they had any autos...they are the stupid americans that make our auto-to-manual ratio so poor compared to europe and japan...I believe about 1 in 9 cars in america are manual...in europe 2 out of 3 are...

I hate autos

Re: Should I buy this?

it's all just preference. I would get a stick-shift instead of an auto, but I searched for a 240 for too long and the one I came across was a great deal. Also i'm not going to race in my 240 or anything, just my daily driver. When i get out of college in two years though I'm goin to get a 350z, and definetly a manual on that. I don't plan to make my 240 a 10 sec car, just a daily driver to and from work/school. Stick-shift might have been more fun and good practice before I step up to a real sports car (350z) but oh well, I'll just rent a manual and beat that up before I lay my hands on the 350z.
