Can you ID a mazda 13B core as being a turbo?
I've got this 13B core and besides just trying to figure out the year of manufacture, I am also trying to figure out if it's a turbo or not. Are there additional ports on the turbo model or some kind of identifing feature?
Thanks Rich |

Re: Can you ID a mazda 13B core as being a turbo?
the 86-91 N/A engines have 6 ports total (1 on each side from the center plate and 2 on the side plates, one of them being a funny shaped auxillary port). The turbo engines just have 4.

if there is no intake on th engine, look at the rear rotor housing..
if it has a small hole (water) about even with the intake ports then it is a turbo core from 87-1995 you can also look into the exhaust ports.. do they have a sleeve in them with a piece of metal that looks like it would hinder exhaust flow.. or more specifically noise? if so it would be an N/A Look at the oil pan, does the oil pan have an oil return tube on the side where the exhaust ports are? if so, it is turbo.. How about just behind where the crank angle sensor (distributor thingy) is there a banjo bolt there with a tube that would have carries oil towards the turbo, or atleast a hole there where this banjo bolt and tube could have attached... if so, it is obviously a turbo. those are the easy things to check for differences on pretty much all rotaries 1970's to current to tell the different between N/A and Turbo.. take a picture and i can tell you, what it is.. |
