MOANING '03 JEEP Cherokee-BE FORWARNED!

Well, well, well a 2nd trip to the dealer and a phone call to another brings the reponse of "they all do that".What a response.According to Jeep, the rear end in my 2003 Cherokee 2 wheel drive is the same as what would be in a 4 wheel drive Cherokee and they all make the moaning noise on slow hard turns.Unfortunatley I did not make the slow hard turn when test driving or I would have never leased this vehicle.Luckly this is a lease vehicle and I guess it can moan itself to death.I had the dealer write on the repair order his explanation of this problem so there will be no questions later. However,if I would or if anyone would test drive a vehicle and hear this noise I don't think you would buy it and the response of "they all do that" would not be to satisfying. What manufacturer makes these rear ends?I find this all to be ridiculous! And to through a monkeywrench into the whole thing my son leased a 2 wheel drive Jeep Liberty and it doesn't make any noise. Is there a different manufacturer for the Liberty rear ends?I want to hear other opinions about this? Would you still buy a vehicle with this problem? Is there anyone else out there with a 2 wheel drive Cherokee that does or does not have this problem? Yes I am "dazed and confused" and I'm starting to walk in circles. (my rear end only moans once in a while) So let me know what you think about this.Thank you all. Mike

I think they are feeding you a line of crap. I have a 91 cherokee 4 door with a 5 sp/2wd and I don't have any moaning sound at all. I do get some rattles when i hit bumps and trails and stuff but i think it is my plate and exaust banging around. the moaning sound i don't have. i would make them fix it especially if they can hear it when you bring it in. I would contact Chrysler/Jeep/eagle and talk to someone higher up. If there is a "DEFECT" in the vehicle they could confirm it. If the dealer says that they all do it get it from there head office on offical letter head. They will dance for you then I am sure. I love my jeep and will look at getting another one when the day comes but i hate dealers like that. they suck. I I think it is crappy what they are doing to you. don't fall for it!

we did call detroit and the guy we talked to said they are aware of a problem with the rear end (dana 44/sure-grip) their engineers are working on it,they don't have a fix yet,but when they find something out they will call us.(i'm not holding my breath) they did suggest to take it to another dealer.( this will be 3rd trip)i am wondering if they could have forgot to add the additive that is needed with this rear end.I am going to suggest a fluid and addative change.

As suggested by someone sitting at a desk in Detroit,we made a trip to another dealer and his response was there is definitly something wrong with this rearend,it should be torn apart and looked at or replaced.Sooo when I return home from vacation I will yet visit another dealer to spill my Jeep story of mystery and intrique. This is like a nightmare you can have over and over but never get to the end of it.I have visited 1 dealer twice,he had a TSB about power steering hoses touching, which he seperated for me.This did nothing. On the 2nd visit he then told me everything was ok,they all make this noise.I then called Detroit and was told the engineers are aware of this problem and are working on it and when they figure something out they will call me.In the meantime why don't I try another dealer. So off I went and this is when I was told something was wrong and it should be taken apart and looked at or replaced. So when I get home from vacation its off I go.Someday I hope to return to this forum and put an end to this problem once and for all.In the meantime I would like to thank you all for allowing me to vent my frustrations about my 2 wheel drive,sure-grip,moaning ass end Jeep.Thanks.

Honestly I don't kow how many people read the Cherokee postings but I think our small group really appreciates our jeeps. Keep us posted on what happens if for no other reason than to prevent other users from being taken advantage of

keep on jeepin

I have a 91 Chero and it makes that noise during turn sharp corners. It doesnt bother me too much because its a Jeep and will not break down.
The cherokees have Dana/Spicer Axles which are the BEST AXLES in the WORLD. The reason the axles make that noise is because when you are turning, the axle on the outside of the turn wants to tear away from the car. However Dana Axles have clips that keep the axle shaft from moving at all instead just a little bit like in most axles. That noise you hear is the clips doing their job. If you really cant stand the noise then get a heavier gear oil with shock protection and that will mute the noise IF you buy quality gear oil.

The reason the Liberties do not do it is because they have COMPLETLY different drivetrain components than a Chero.

In the end DONT worry about this prob. Jeeps are VERY WELL BUILT! My Jeep makes all kinds of old truck noise, it just adds personality to my allready AWESOME Jeep.

Keep On Jeepin On

To follow up on the Jeep saga:the last dealer that told us to have the rear end torn apart or replaced also changed the fluid and added the special addative that is called for with the sure grip rear end. They said it may or may not help and that it would take around 200 miles until we could see if it did or not. It's been about 150 miles and what a difference.I would hate to jinx what's happening, but I do not hear this moaning, tire rubbing, growling noise anymore.I am left to assume that the factory left out the addative, what else could explain this?I must say though, what a difference there is with dealers.I had 2 dealers that said "they all do that, there's nothing wrong".The third dealer was the one that said there was something wrong and who also tried the changing of the fluid and putting in the addative.I must put in a plug for a job WELL DONE to the Verona Jeep dealer right outside of Pittsburgh,PA.They seemed to have fixed the problem and never told us the line "they all do that".Just so they get the credit they deserve,I just got out my paper and their name is Verona Jeep-Eagle.Thanks guys!

Thanks for the follow up. I am glad that you did not settle for the advice of those Dumb Asses. You may want to write a letter to Chrysler/Jeep head office and tell them about your experiacne. Thanks for sharing with us. Don't ever go for that CRAP!

Keep on Jeepin!

Suggestion!

My suggestion for your moaning ass end, would have been to stay clear of Jeep and lease a dependable vehicle! ie. Toyota, Honda, Chev...

From what I've been reading in this forum and all the problem's I've had with my Cherokee, I wouldn't suggest Jeep to my worst enemy!!!

A little moan and you people get all shook up. Its just the sound of the C clip under load when you have gear oil with a low shock protection. THATS IT, big fucking deal.

sbroham- if little sounds make you soooo fucking worried then dont by an older car. EVERY older used car makes various noises, EVERY!

Wink

My last truck was a 86' Toyota 4x4 Pick-up. I had it for 3 years it had 287,000km and all I had to put into it was a set of brake pads. This thing could not be destroyed on or off the road, now that's a reliable used vehicle but you stick with your problem causing Jeeps so that there is one less headache for someone else to make the mistake of buying.
I'm sure I'll be back in a week or so with something else that's gone wrong after I finish putting a rad in.

Have a good one! Check out a real truck...

XJnick's Chero has 400K+ MILES on it, suck on that fine ass shit. Oh wait a minute you were talking about a Toyota... but.. what about GM, I thought GMs last soooooo long.

BTW- 287,000km is nothing thats only about 178k miles; Im only about 20,000miles away from that, big whoop.

Enough of you sbrohman, sell you Jeep and go buy whatever the fuck you want. In the end Jeeps will still be the best, but if you cannot deal with fact then fine... go have fun with whatever, but go complain about Jeeps in some other place. This has been going on too long.

Yes. It is true, my Cherokee has survived through 400,xxx with very few problems. The original AMC engine went about 355,000 miles! The interior is like new and the body has no rust whatsoever. In my opinion, Jeep is doing something right in their vehicles
