c5 vette with 2grand to upgrade

i know this is a camaro page but the vette page isnt very active so
my dad has a c5 vette and wants to upgrade with his tax returns $2200 is all he's using, we have been told to get exhaust intake and chip or cumputer programer or whatever. the guy says it will put him at a little over 400hp. is this true? or is there another way of making big power for 2 grand.
ps he kinda wants Z06 speed wich is why he's aiming for 405hp
though i know there is more to it then just the hp diffrence

Re: c5 vette with 2grand to upgrade

hm. What i would do, is aim for 380HP then spend the rest on handling and braking. Maybe some BAER drilled discs, borla cat back, hypertech chip, slp intake, and hooker headers.

Re: c5 vette with 2grand to upgrade

I'd put an LS6 intake on it, full exhaust, and see what you had left over from there...

Re: c5 vette with 2grand to upgrade

well, there is always the old hot rod stuff, port and polish the heads, put a cam in it, there are many LS1 cams on the market. manley race flo valves. BlkCamaroSS is also correct in advising you to get the LS6 intake, some headers, and full cat back exhaust. as far as suspension, there isnt that much diff between the cars. and the stock vette handels pretty well, so i dont personally think thats an issue. so just modify everything to get the most air in, and the most air out, and you will make power.

Don't the vette have true duals from the factory? I can't remember which year the vette went to one in and one out. In any event I'd make your self some true duals..well sorta anyway. Get headers, as long as you can get, some 3" pipe, two high flow cats, some more pipe, and a flowmaster 80 series muffler get the one with 2 in and 2 out. There's a guy at work that has this set up..add that with the LS6 intake, pollished heads..don't really need to port them, larger valves, cam, throttle body and mass airflow senser I think you'll be pretty close to your mark.

Ok,now with $2200 to spend and assuming that the car is bone stock, if you want the best bang for the buck, spend the money on a set of headers (shorty), exhaust, cold air kit, and a bottle (NOS). Unfortantly a heads and cam package installed is gonna cost you anywhere from 3000-3500 installed. And going off your budget and to get the max performance out of your $2200, thats the route I would go. Now granted it's alot cheaper if you do your own work, but I'm assuming that your gonna be paying someone to install everything. A LS6 intake would be a bad investment either, but if you give it sometime, the market is gonna be filled with them, considering the new LSX intake will be hitting the market, and the manufactor is claiming 20 HP over the LS6. Pay attention to alot of the f-body orientated sites, you can also find alot of good prices on used parts as well.

Hope that helps RACING

Biggest gain will be from a comp cams custom grind 224/224 .563/.563 112 cam.

Or you can get a Lunati 224/224/.560/.560 114 cam.

Do the cam, reflash the PCM and do a cold air setup.

Will be good for 400hp at the motor.

If he has to buy the cam, springs, and retainers, gaskets ect. it will be about ~$650 new. For a .56~/.56~ cam, he is probably going to need the upgrade on the springs/retainers. The cam only will run ~$350. Installation will vary, but it's not cheap either, but on your budget it will be fine.
