Re: 84 vette with a LT1
Wow, sounds pretty cool, I have an 84, and Im not quite pleased with the performance of the Crossfire Injection, it saves gas, but, not fast enough. Let us know how everything turns out (dont 4get to take some pics too!)

It should fit fine under the hood. The wiring will be a real pain tho. See if painless wiring has anything for it. You will need alot more fuel pressure so a fuel pump swap will be nessessary. I am gonna swap mine to carb so i dont need a laptop to tune it.

Re: 84 vette with a LT1
Hey, dont get me wrong, the 84's are not the fastests stock Vettes, but yet they are they cheapest ones. Now, with a little bit of time, knowledge and the right parts, you could have a hell of a car. I've had my 84 for almost 3 years now, and when its not one thing its another, but I still like it. The more I work on it, the more I like it. You have to keep in mind that its a 21-22 year old car. Believe me, chicks dig Corvettes, Im 21, they rather go for a ride in my "Dan-mobile" than on my friend's bikes and Stangs, the vette stands out no matter what, you know what? Because is the ONLY true american sports car. Good luck!!! BTW, how many times have you seen an import driver waive at another import driver?

No they are not the fastest. They are faster than a couple of previous years tho. My motor is pretty stock except for flowmaster exhaust, no emissions crap, hi flow TPI fuel pump, and a K&N filter. I have 3.07:1 gears with a aut0 700R4 with a shift kit. I have smoked the hell out of many many civics, accords, and such imports ricers w/ loud pipes and 3 ft wings. Not saying i dont like 4 bangers cause i have a dodge neon too. Its great for Daily driver. After the 400 HP kit, im going after cobras and Z06's. Lata guys.

Re: 84 vette with a LT1
For the LT1 swap, your best bet is it also pull the entire engine wiring harness from the donor car... as well as the computer... The only wiring hassle then will be getting power to the computer and wiring it into your gauges if you so desire...

Back to the original question. No, don't do it. It will take you major time and cost more than the finished project will be worth. The donar car has a t56 transmission. There is all kinds of info on the www.corvetteforum.com regarding trying to put one of these in a c4 Vette. You might be able to get the LT1 in but you're going to have a problem with that tranny I think. If you took the $5000 or so it'll cost you in your time and parts, put that down as a down payment on a '97 or '98 C5 Vette that you can now get for about $20,000. You will have a way better car and less headaches. And sell the '84 for whatever you can to use as your downpayment.

I kind of had little chuckle when I read this thread, because I am right now just finishing up putting a TPI engine in my '84, and now I get a sick laugh when I think there are others that will do the same thing
Bob is right that the tranny will probably give you a real headache, but the engine will not be a walk in the park either. I did mine based on questions I asked, and all I got were answers like "Go ahead, it's not that hard" or "That engine will slip right in and you'll have it running in no time". Well, the engine did slip right in, after all, a small block is a small block, but it's the wiring that Project_Speed mentioned that will be the most time consuming and frustrating part. What it boils down to is how much do you love your current car, and how much work and money do you want to put into it? Like Bob mentioned, it will cost quite a bit to get that 6-speed into the C4, but it can be done. And yes, $5000 will be a nice down-payment on a C5, but will that make you happy? It's all a matter of personal opinion, just be prepared for a tough road ahead if you decide to do the conversion. |
