Post timing belt on talon turbo

I need to know if anyone know what is the probablity of engine damage there is if the timing belt snaps while the car is running. I know there are chances of the engine not getting any damage, but what are the probabilities? if anyone knows that would be great

Erdrick191;
In all honesty, it's a crap shoot. If the belt snaps or jumps out of time at high engine speeds the probability is much greater though.

I take it yours has broken?

Re: timing belt on talon turbo

Well that all really depends on how the engine operates. If the talon has an "interference' type engine then yes it is very detrimental. This means that the valves will touch the piston face when fully open and the piston is at the top of its stroke.

If not, then there shouldent be a real problem. But fromt he sounds of things DSM's have an "interference" style engine, so most likly it will cause bent valves.

To check do a compression test. If no compression you probably ave bent valves.

Good luck

Yes it is an interference style motor The amount of damage done can go from none - motors toast. I pulled the head off one that lost the belt @ over 75 MPH and the owner left it in gear till it stopped Not a good thing there. The base of one intake valve broke off and stuck into the piston on edge. As the piston went up n down the valve base hacked up the head then broke threw the piston While the hunks of head it chipped off got between the piston and cyl wall and chewed up the block
I will work on finding the photos of that mess.
Please keep in mind thats a worse case deal there. If it was shut down soon enough you could just have some bent valves. As 89turbo944 said do the compression test and alittle praying wouldnt hurt.
Good luck.

Re: timing belt on talon turbo

Just to clarify a bit, you can't check the compression if the belt is broken, or if it has jumped out of time. It has to be replaced first. Either of these situations makes a compression test impossible because the valves either don't open and close at all, or they aren't opening and closing at the right time in relationship to the piston strokes.

While Talon engines are interference (sometimes called zero valve clearance) engines, that doesn't mean valve damage will always occur when the belt fails. If the belt just jumps out of time, you stand a much better chance of not having valve damage.

Re: timing belt on talon turbo

The purpose of the compression test is to see if there is any compression. It is not know if the belt has jumped, or broken.

If the belt has jumped it will read no compression. Also if the belt has broken it will read no compression and the valves will be bent.

If the belt has not broken but skiped a few teeth then the valves will have hit eh piston top and bent them. Causing little to no compression.

First thing to do is chech that the timing belt is still intact. The do a compression test to see the condition of the cylinder.

Re: timing belt on talon turbo

I see I got lucky now...while only going 30mph and 3500rpms, my balance shaft belt broke and got caught in the timing belt causing that to skip. I religned everything but it still wont start but I do have cold compression in 2 cylinders but nothing in the other two, the heads look fine but it seems that the valves for cylinders 1 and 2 are bent.
