96 Plymouth Voyager 3.3L Suddenly Stalls & Shifting Problem (Related?)
Sorry if you've read this already. I don't know how to alter my heading on my last post, but I put the year of my mini-van as 1995 when it is a '96.
I have two problems I believe may be related, but am not sure. 1st problem is shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd though, 2nd to 3rd is not as bad as from 1st to 2nd. It stumbles and gets really bad if I don't let up on the gas. After the initial shudder it will go into 2nd just fine. I also have to gun the gas a little bit when I first start the car, or it will just sit there and idle and never go into gear. 2nd and more annoying is that it stalls after driving around a bit. It happens on freeway or city. It doesn't stutter or anything the rpm's drop to 0 and it just stalls and won't start up for a 5 - 10 minutes or so. Codes pulled are P0731, & P0736. The transmission was replaced about 2 years ago with a refurbished one. Could it be going out again already? The guy at Autozone suggested replacing the TSS (Transmission Speed Sensor?) to see if that was the problem. I have not done this yet, but plan to. Any other suggestions. |

Re: 96 Plymouth Voyager 3.3L Suddenly Stalls & Shifting Problem (Related?)
Stalling - Crankshaft/camshaft sensors would be high on my list. Fuel pump would be another.
Shifting - Gear ratio error codes suggest worn clutches. Have a shop read the clutch volume index numbers and check for internal transmission codes. These aren't the codes read with an ordinary scanner. Might try a fluid/filter change.

Re: 96 Plymouth Voyager 3.3L Suddenly Stalls & Shifting Problem (Related?)
Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to change the transmission speed sensors (inner & outer? terminology?) and I will post back results. Crankshaft & camshaft sensors will be next. Lastly for obvious reasons will be the fuel pump.
After that I will take it in for readings from a shop for the internal transmission codes. Thanks again! |

Re: 96 Plymouth Voyager 3.3L Suddenly Stalls & Shifting Problem (Related?)
OK, changed the TSS sensors and no change. Searching on Youtube for easy way to change fuel pump came across a possible cause for one of my problems, the stalling. I've included the webpage below. The response to her video is below as well. This girl threw everything at this car. All sensors, fuel pump and more! No change. I am afraid I am starting down the same path. Please tell me what you think about the cause that this guy lists in his response.
Response from Youtube page: "A shame techs simply threw parts at it & hoped. "Remove & Replace" troubleshooting. This expensive way to do it. How about RESEARCH. I had a problem that lasted for several years but wouldn't agree to R&R. I found it at the library TSB 18-12-98.The car hesitated & would stall when hot. Dodge had problems w/WIRING from sensors to computer. Fix was a new wire run from the forward O2 sensor to the computer. Fixed it. I read problems too in wiring from coolant temperature probe: Fix? New connector." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9skJjI3F-c |
