1996 Lincoln Towncar drivers side windowI have a 1996 lincoln town car and the drivers side window stopped working, The garage replaced the regulator

I have a 1996 Lincoln town car and the drivers side window regulator broke.

The garage replaced the regulator and after replacement when the window reached the end of its travel it make a clicking noise and the noise would not stop until I hit the window switch.

The garage said the new regulator was defective and they replaced it but it still did the same thing, then they said it was the plastic clutch bushings in the motor they replaced them and it still makes the clicking noise however if I take my finger off the window switch before the window reaches the top or bottom of travel it does not make the clicking noise

They now say both the window switch and window motor are defective and they want to replace both .

I did not have this problem until they replaced the regulator the first time.

Is there a limit or stop switch that signals the window when it reaches the end of its travel. The garage said there is no switch to stop the window but could not tell me how the window knows when to stop.

If there is no switch what signals the widow to stop at the end of its travel.

Can anyone give me an idea on what is causing the problem so I can fix it myself or tell the garage what the problem is so they can repair it instead of just replacing parts.

The clicking noise comes when you open or close the window? For what I can understand it happens when you lower the window with the automatic control...

If this is the problem, it might be the automatic module (I don't know the exact name of it) It is a blue box located inside the door, it's function is to lower the window and stop the current flowing when it SENSES A HIGHER CURRENT meaning the window has stopped (when it reaches the bottom).

Thanks olopezm for answering the post.
Yes the clicking noise occurs when the window is lowered or raised with the switch in the automatic position or if I do not take my finger off the switch when in the manual position
If I remove my finger from the switch before the window hits top or bottom, there is no clicking.

I know the clicking is the plastic clutch bushings in the window motor and they are there to prevent damage to the regulator or motor when the motor does not shut off.
The clutch bushings have been replaced.

I have seen the window module but did not know what its purpose was and now I think from your post I understand the operation of the window.

Correct me if I am wrong:
When you press the window button the current comes from the battery goes to the switch then through the control module and operates the motor.
When the window reaches the end of its travel, eather up or down it puts stress on the regulator and causes the motor to draw excessive current and that message is sent to the circuit in the module that opens a relay to shut off the motor.

If the above is correct I would think the problem would be in the regulator tension because tension is not being applied soon enough to the module to shut off the motor.
I have looked at the regulator but could see any way to make an adjustment.

I don't think the module is bad, as I never had this problem until the garage replaced the regulator.

I called the garage and asked them if there was any way to test the window door module and they had no idea what I was talking about.
I think I will repair this problem myself and next time I need work done find another garage for any repair work.

If anyone else has any ideas please share.

olopezm if you have anymore information I would like for you to post and the window motor diagram was a big help in understanding the operation of the motor.

Thanks again.

That's almost correct, it will detect current overflow when lowering the window with the one touch down feature, there is no one touch up option. As far as I know that's the only moment when the current is being sensed...

I've uploaded the full diagram so you have it at hand for future reference.

Make sure all the bolts are properly installed and tightened, I read somewhere else a similar problem and the reason was one of the bolts holding the motor to the regulator wasn't properly installed. You might have to take the regulator assembly out for inspection...

Oscar.

Ps By the way, I know it's a bit late but WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Olopezm

I will check the regulator and attaching bolts for proper installation.

I am wondering for future reference, if in any books you might have, does it give the current draw of the module, such as correct current draw during normal operation and at window motor shutoff or maybe module troubleshooting.
This could prove useful in event I find nothing wrong with the regulator or attaching bolts.

The full diagram will prove very useful, the only problem was it was to small to read.
I tried to enlarge with a screen capture program and magnify but with magnification the diagram was blurry.
Anyway to resend.
Thanks

I've re-uploaded the diagram as PDF for you. Unfortunately I don't have any current values but you could try measuring the current on the other side during normal situation and when the window reaches the bottom; and compare it with your driver side readings. I'm leaning more towards a mounting bolt, it was the same situation I read and the guy said to have the same clicking noise.

The pdf came though just fine and will help in future troubleshooting.

I really appreciate the assistance you have given and the first thing I will check will be the mounting bolts.
