Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

Hey guys,
I've gone nuts over air cooled 911's recently and went on a spending spree of Fujimi Enthusiast Porsche kits, this is the first one i'm working on as a sort of dry run to see how they build and to build something cool for my daughter(gotta get her on my side so one day I can own a real 911..lol).

This one is a sort of "what if" Sally Carrera from Cars was based off the older air cooled models from the 80's. Mods so far have been removing the nasty impact bumper moldings, and cutting
some air cooling vents into the rear reflector area. I also modded the exhaust from side exit to a center exit design.

The paint is my first time using nail polish and for it to not be cleared I think it looks ok. My wife hooked me up with some old colors she wasn't going to use anymore and I started out with a pale blue, and promptly ran out of it (these paints are thin). I also planned on an over coat that had purple pearl in it...so I sprayed it on....car looked ok, but I could see thin spots. I found another bottle close to the original blue and added some pearl ex powder interference blue to it. Then the paint looked good, but still was missing the "Sally" look. I shot some HOK sg100 intercoat clear with some pearl ex duo blue/green, interference blue, and a small amount of interference violet in it and shot that and its where it is now which you can pick out some of the green and blue in the flash(i'll have outside pics when she's finished). I've got some hok clear mixed up and one day this week she'll get cleared. Stance and wheels will be box stock, but the wheels will be finished differently.

The motor is stock with aluminum plate and stainless steel metalizer, and some tamiya comp. orange for some contrast to the blue body color. I"ll add some blue "carrera" side stripes and Sally's tattoo on the back, and some cf on the front bumper lip spoiler. These fujimi kits are fun to build, not easy but challenging in a good way(plus i'm finding out about all the fit problems before I get geared up for the other 5 kits i've got to build). Anyway comments and critiques are always welcome.

p.s I just noticed the paint looks kinda thin in the front trunk area..most of that will be covered with gas tank and some detail painting(plus a possible wash)

Thanks
Gray

Yeah, I've got a pile of Fujimi's Enthu 911's too. I love air cooled Porsches (but I haven't built one yet! ). We don't see alot of these kits built up here, so I'll certainly watch with interest.

Engine looks terrific, and nice color on the body.

Damn man, really informative text, but just a little reminder making it less of a PITA to read, could you use paragraphs? it would make it more enjoyable to follow...

Otherwise, as said before I m looking very much forward seeing it done. Guess cars is an inspiration to us all.

won't you consider doing "cars" eyes? It's pretty easy to do, not to whore or anything (but what the hell) I just did an interpretation of it and it worked out easily.

I understand totally, I've been told i'm a bit long winded...I redid the above post to paragraphs.

So far as adding some eyes...I may do that, hadn't really though about it but it would be easy. I'll think about it as I get closer to the end of the build.

To everyone, thanks for all the comments thus far, I'm looking forward to seeing this one on the shelf. I'll document more along the way.

Re: Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

Very nice! I really like that colour ! I'm another one with a stack of Fujimi 911's to do ( 23 at the last count & another on the way!) I've only built one so far - an '85 Turbo Cabriolet - and the only problem with that was the wheels weren't quite central in the arches. May be worth checking for, but as there are a number of different moulds for this range of models, it may not affect yours.

looking forward to seeing this one done!

Cheers

Re: Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

I envy you for having a "bunch" of Enthusiast 911 kits!! If I had the money (which I certainly don't), I would also buy a collection of Enthusiast 911's, as well as Ferraris and BMW's. The Enthusiast 911 Flatnose turbo is the best model I have ever built. The fit was extremely good (despite what I've heard about Fujimi kits), and even though I was an amateur at the time, the kit came out looking extremely detailed just because of the excellent parts. I especially liked the parking brake lever (yours should be the same), and of course the engine is just ridiculously detailed. Once I graduate from college and get steady employment, Enthusiast kits will be my primary objective. I can't wait

Re: Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

Man, I was moving some stuff around and the body and kit was in its box, and it fell, face first on the floor...opened up the box and the body had shattered, way beyond any hope of repair, the front and rear bumpers are ok, but the body is toast...if anyone has a spare body or kit on the cheap..let me know. i'll get pics of the carnage eventually...man i'm upset

now I gotta see if I can match that color again......darn

Re: Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

Damn, that's a shame. Unfortunately that seems to be a weakness with these kits - at least 3 of the ones I've bought through e-bay have come through the post with the roof squashed, so unfortunately I can't help you with a spare body. I'm going to try resin casting soon so hope I can learn the techniques well enough to learn how to cast up Fujimi 911 roof sections to repair my damaged ones!

Hope you can get it fixed
All the best

keith

I read your post about this at MCM forums and that is a shame. Sometimes the modeling gremlins are real bastards!!!

No worries about the body. Fujimi has recently had in production a number of their 911 Enthu kits, and they do all share the same body. Which essentially means that getting a spare body should be no real trick.

Go to HLJ and read over their replacement parts service policy. Then order yourself a new body. You'll have it in a few weeks. Easy.

You're on your own about matching the nailpolish color.

Oh i'm not that worried about the body, theres a cheapie testors kit on the bay right now that i'm going to try to bid on, and the color I think i've got enough left of the original stuff, the color actually was more of the pearl ex powders than anything else...at least this gives me the opportunity of fixing some small things that were wrong with the body.

Re: Fujimi Enthusiast 85 911 Carrera, project "Sally"

small update, no pics though.... Stripped the paint off the remaining parts..realized my body work on the back bumper really sucked, and the front bumper was really plain...so I re-did them. Back bumper is smoother now, front bumper has been modded to include an RSR style oil cooler inlet. Also I've got a new Carrera on its was to me from evilbay, and went out shopping for nail polish and found another color thats pretty close to my original base coat since the color on the body above was more pearls than paint. I'll have pics up soon...lots of work ahead!
