Timing Belt

bought my car used at 114,000 miles. Timing belt needed to be replced at 90,000 according to Honda. It never was (just found out a yr. later) now they tell me my $2,000 warrenty don't cover it and I need to shell out $300+ for a new timing belt. So, my question: are they full of bullsh*t, do I really need a new timing belt? It's been a yr. and I have only put 4,000miles on it. I drive it every day, just very little. It's at 118,000 miles now. How long should I go before getting it replaced? Had I better do as the shop says and get a new one right away? please, I need to know! It's a sh*t load of money that I would rather spend UPGRADING the car, not FIXING IT!

Thanx AHA (Any Help Appriciated)

I recently bought a used Civic as well, what I was told by my mechanic, the Honda Dealership, and my Haynes repair manual, is that the timing belt is the one piece equipment that must be replaced. Basically it comes down to replacing it now, or having to possibly do major repairs when the belt goes.

And make sure it's a Honda timing belt. I've heard bad stories about using non-Honda timing belts, they may not be true, but it's not worth risking it.

You are supposed to change it every 60,000 miles. I would do it ASAP because you never know when it will snap. If it does, it just means alot of costly repairs for you.
