What year is your car?
Is it not working with in-car release, with the key, or both? On mine an 83 NA, it looks like you can put the rear seats down, and with a little twisting and b****ing, remove the covers over the latches (I'm guess an 8-10mm socket). Then you should be able to release the latch with a screw driver. GL, hope it helps.

Re: The hatch to my 944 will not open!
if the latch won't open from the outside with a key, it might just be that your latch mechanism needs to be lubricated. mine wouldn't open for the longest time, and i couldn't open it from the outside either. finally i had a brain storm and figured out that it was a fuse. i think the fuse was a 15. n/e check the fuse see if it's blown.
P.S. The fuse also controls interior lights, clock, and the cigarette lighter.

Re: The hatch to my 944 will not open!
if its opening on one side and not on the other, check the push/pull rod on the latch for damage. it is easy to get to. you just un-snap the carpet on the back wall of the luggage compartment. the maechanism is right behind where you insert the key on the outside.

Re: The hatch to my 944 will not open!
I had a similar problem.
1. Changed the rear hatch weather stripping. This made the hatch pop up out of the latch when presing the internal release. Then pulling up from drivers side releases secondary latch. 2. Found the pins in the latch were all gummed up. I still can't get the key to work but will as soon as I get to that one. |

My 924 has a manual hatch, and it was really hard to open when I first got it. I lubed the mechanism with some bike chain lube I had, and now it works like a charm.

stuck hatch
I had the same proplem on my 951. you will have to crawl through from the inside. unsnap the carpet to access the latch mechanisms, go to the side that is stuck and loosen the 4 bolts that hold the latch to the car, just loosening them sould allow the post to come out of the latch, I had to take both latches out of the car to work some lube into them, the chain lube someone else suggested is a good idea (it's sticky and will stay there longer).
