Toyota Supra JGTC 2003

O.K. On seeing Nismo400R's latest project (the Honda NSX), I thought I'd better get around to starting a progress thread on my current kit. In the same way that Nismo is converting a Honda NSX to the 2003 spec car I am doing the same with a Studio 27 Toyota Supra.
Converting from this:

which is the standard body as it comes in the kit to this:

The main differences are to the body shape, the wheel arches are a lot more 'boxy' both front and rear, also the body shape below the side doors is different. The rear wing is now mounted centrally rather than at the edges, also the fuel filler caps are now just behind the side window rather than on the rear of the car.

To start with I added the extra side skirts, these were in fact joined to the body when it came, they were just extra pieces moulded to the body that would normally be cut off and discarded but they followed the line of the body perfectly and so were ideal for the extra skirts. Next I started with the front wheel arches, these are three separate pieces of styrene sheet for each side glued into place one at a time, part of the top of the original wheel arch had to be cut away so that the styrene had a flat surface to stick to and so that it was in line with the top of the bonnet. Once these styrene pieces were in place then the gaps were filled with putty and then filler and sanded smooth.

The rear wheel arches were a little more complex but along the same idea as the front, three styrene pieces on each side, one glued onto the rear bumper, one onto the side of the wheel arch and one onto the top of the arch, more putty and filler to plug and fill the gaps and then more sanding.

Also on the last picture you can see that the original fuel filler and the mounting slots for the rear wing at the outer edges of the bootlid have been filled in.

Also now I have made the new fuel filler holes and slots for the rear wing mounting so soon be able to primer and then check for imperfections in the filler-more filling and sanding needed no doubt!

More soon hopefully.

Steve

Re: Toyota Supra JGTC 2003

Excellent! I will be 'glued' to this thread. I just love those kits, done 1 and a half so far (2001), saving to buy the other 4.

Brave man to start playing with a Studio27 Kit. Make sure to do a full progress thread so that I can copy you!!! Can't wait to see it done.

You're a brave man to modify a kit like that, but it's looking good so far... keep us posted.

Hi all, progress is a bit slow on this one I'm afraid, but here's the latest.
The putty is now sanded and the body has had several coats of primer. In the latest pic's you can see the new place for the fuel fillers behind the side window and also slots cut in the rear for the centrally mounted wing, a small slot for the rear tow hook and the bottom skirt and the sides. I have also made a start on the chassis but there is not a lot to show here yet, as everything so far is just black.

Steve

You're on the right track, Steve. It's looking very good, very clean. If you hadn't told us otherwise, I would've thought you bought this kit as it is now!
