Newbie got his SR20
hello, for anyone who dosen't know i have a 93' 240sx coupe that i just got a sr20 and 5-speed swap done, all custom intercooler work, my intercooler is simpley massive, i don't know how else to describe it, and its cold up in pittsburgh this time a year, i had a few simple questions about my car.
1st is there any precations i have to take in the cold, any thing i should watch for be more careful about 2nd i seem to have trouble with idle, say i wind out any gear to 4-7k RPM and i come to a red light, put in the clutch and stop when the clutch is depresed, the tac drops to almost zero the dash lights come on and then it pulls back up to idle, some times it even stalls, some times it dosent even happen. so my question, what might be causing this. 3rd when my car left the shop i was warned of a posible bad turbo, what are the warning signs of a bad turbo, any help would be great, thank you for your time. |

was the engine new when you got it? if not how many miles did it have? did you break it in gradually at all or just stomp it the first day? that may be why, depending on how many miles the engine has and how long it was sitting unused... or it might have cold sprak plugs which aren't good for city driving... you need hot plugs for a daily driver usually... those could both be wrong but just thoughts

Re: Newbie got his SR20
maybe it's so cold your engine isn't even warmed up yet! ahah i.e. rough idle from dirty fuel injectors and/or too fuel is too lean. simply raise your idle and then clean your injectors(with bottle or goto nissan dealer and get the "Real" job). then lower idle for good break in. unless it could be electrical probs? i donno

Re: Newbie got his SR20
im realy scared to jump on it acualy, it scares the shit outa me now, i havent realy red lined it yet, but a bad turbo woulent cause the idling problem? would it?
its strange u'll take ur foot off the pettle and the needle bounces off the 0 pin a couple times n then kicks back up to 1k, but its scarie cause its kills your power stearing fora split second and if your takin a turn its like waaah. i let the engine warm up i wont go till the tempture is at running, i wont shut it off unless it idles for 2 minents first (ghetto turbo timer) i poped the hood when i got home the other night, and the turbo itself (the castiron back part) was glowing red, i dunno if that is normal, just tryin to sort things, thanks for all your help! |

Re: Newbie got his SR20
yeah, a glowing turbine housing is not a good thing for a stock motor/turbo combo.
that could be a problem... part of your "bad turbo" question just got answered. |

Re: Newbie got his SR20
i didn't think so, its been sittin here in the garuage since i got it, i don't wana risk further damaging anything, so i took the intercooler pipes to be powdercoated turned out nice, looks like black wet paint, i have to drive it back out to hybrid dynamics on monday to have them further examin the situation, is there any harm in driving it easy? let me know, thanks for all your help, you gota help the turbo newbies =p thank ou guys

Haha. I've got a friend with a Skyline who happened to be doing burnouts in a grass paddock one night. After a standstill ('doing' 160km/h) the turbo started glowing. I shook my head, then joined in everyone else laughing. |
