Exclamation Speedometer, Cruise, and Odometer Problems

I have a 1989 240sx coupe that had been "bumped" in the rear by another car while the last owner had it. The HUD doesn't work, and the last owner said it was broken. Every once in a while the speedometer will twitch to 130, the max, and stay there for a while. While the speedometer is doing this my odometer doesn't register any miles, and my cruise control doesn't work either. I have no idea what's causing this problem, but if anyone knows I would appreciate some help.

it sounds like your whole gauge cluster is broken. the harness attached to your hud could be loose or damaged. there are many different things that could be wrong, but i would suggest taking out your hud and checking for loose/damaged harnesses or wires.

Re: Speedometer, Cruise, and Odometer Problems

it's a faulty gauge cluster. mine was the same way... odometer would stick and from time to time, speedometer would jump all over the place and go crazy.

very very common

only thing you can do is take out the gauge trim and try to pop in another one. i tried to get one off of ebay, the guy said it works, i put it in and it did the same thing, only worse.

just take it out and keep popping in another used one until it works. otherwise just forget about it, it really is no big deal.

I have a 95 240, no speedometer but I have some odeometer problems. it also gets stuck time to time, I bought it used so I don't know how many real miles it's been driven. You would think it would be fixed after 6 years, sheesh

One thing you have to remember when changing out your gauges is nt to mess with the needles. My friend messed up the needles on his car when he put on blue gauges. Now they don't work properly, because they are run by senors and by touching them you mess up the sensors.
