Airfix 1/32 Vw Beach Buggy + 'I'm back'

So here we are, after more than 2 years without touching a model (my last kit was the Mk1 Gti finished in december 2008), I can officialy say that I’m back!
I spent those month renovating our home and after I had finished all the main rooms I , finally, renovated the attic and installed there my work area as well as lots of other things.

I came from this :

To this :

Everything’s not 100% finished, I still have some little things to do as paint the last sliding door, wood paneling in the stairs, put a sticker on the wide wall, … but I can, at least, start modeling.
It’s hard to take good pictures as I don’t have a wide angle on my camera but I now have all my tools, stuff, accessories … close to me.

I made my own drawers and they are all full with my paints, glues, sprays, … I tought I could paint it but my wife gave me the idea to cover the whole furniture with pages of one of my DragonBall Z manga et clearcoat everything and it’s, I think, what I’m going to do. Always listen to your wife !

So, to bring me back on tracks, I started a 1/32 Airfix kit, the ‘Beach Buggy’. I loved working on smaller scales with the 1/48 Tamiya KDF and this one was tempting me. Despite it’s age I’m impressed by the quality of the kit and it’s fitment. Everything fits like in a dream.

Some sub-assemblies were glued before painting and already have received a coat of primer or flat black. Some parts will be drybrushed and will then stay black (chassis,…) the others will get a coat of steal (engine, fan housing, …) or silver (rims) before I apply different washes and detail paint them.

Sorry for the bad pics, I'll get a better lighting for the next one.

I hope I will update this regularly as this is not the perfect season to start modeling again. Spring is there with all the works outside (lawnmower, flowers, garden,…) but I’m too happy to build again to stop.

Welcome back!

Good job on the hobby room, everything looks nice and tidy (wonder for how long ) Is that some sort of clear magnet where you have your tools on the wall?

Where do you paint?

Yes, it's a magnet for knives on the wall, I bought it at Ikea for less than €10 and it's very usefull.

My compressor and airbrush are in my garage where I have a small painting cabinet with a good lighting and ventilation to drain the painting fumes outside.

Re: Airfix 1/32 Vw Beach Buggy + 'I'm back'

I progressed on the buggy

Wheels were painted, mounted and shadows were made with a black wash and a drybrush of silver on the bolts but also on the rim's lip. The tire was also drybrushed with a mix of 95% Lamp black and 5% Titanium white.

The engine is also painted and glued in place. I applied a black wash on the whole thing followed by a drybrush of silver. I made a darker black wash for the gear box to dissociate it from the engine block. The starter and ignitor were simply painted flat black with a drybrush of the same grey as the tires. I also used Tamiya's weathering kit on the exhaust.

The chassis was simply drybrushed with the same grey.

I made the strap for the battery with a piece of PE sprue, I still have to paint the details and add 2 bolts when I'll glue it to the chassis.

I hope the pics are better now even if I didn't find the time to build my photo booth. For the moment I only use daylight through the window.

Whoa, can I move in to live with You?! I need that working space! My "shop" is ca. 1,2x1m so there's no extra room (it's in our warehouse closet: a table and a chair). Nice progress on the buggy. Welcome back!

Yes, you can, it's a little bit warmer in Belgium compared to Finland but I won't move to your country, cigarettes and beer are too expensive

Hi my friend Deedlit,

It has been a lot of time far far away from models but your new and renovated workbench caused positive envy heehe. Its the dream of many modelers like me, so congratulations sir! And this little model has to be finished at top level, just like your workbench

Best regards from Mexico sir!

Airfix 1/32 Vw Beach Buggy

Some progress on the buggy, mainly on front drive train.

Both parts of the bull-bars had to be glued on the central pin of their support, their ends were flatened to be glued easily, this assembly wasn't strong enough, so I decided to work differently.
I removed the central pin, the part from the box is on the left.

I drilled all the parts and did add a copper wire inside the bars. Proceding like this, I had to remove the flatened end of the bars, they are now a little bit shorter.

The drive train is also built without big modifications except 1/35 bolts from Verlinden Production.

We can see on this pic that the battery is at it's place with the strap bolted to the chassis with PE bolts from kitFormService.

With body on, we can see that the bull-bars fit perfectly the shape of the front even if they are shorter.

I also progressed on the hobby room. As explained earlier, I customised the furniture with drawers I had made.

Necessary tools ...

And after +/- 5 hours of work (done cool, no need to rush ...)

And now at it's place.

Pages are a bit yellowish, after all I own it for 15 years now, but it brings some nice effect

Great progress on both projects. That buggy is very detailed for such a small model and you are really doing a great job improving it further.
