2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

This is the first work I publish here, and my 6th and 7th builds ever. I have to finish them until 24 June, for a Portuguese event.

One will be the Burns version, the winner of the Portuguese Rally in 2000 and the other with the Texaco version, a private team, from the same Rally.

The body of the Texaco version is a bit diferent, being the 99 version, but with a few minor details I get close.

During the work I broke one of the front bumpers, but Airfix sent me another one and the work resumed. Doors oppened, some drilled parts for the antennas, seatbelts and pedals. The rollcage will be copyed from a 1/24 Tamiya model, with 1.2mm Evergreen tubes.

I hope you enjoy.

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

Wow, that will look great. I love the Heller/Airfix 1/43 cars myself, I have a bunch of them. The roll cages are slowing me up a bit, I bought some flower stem-wrapping wire, and some metal wire coated with butyrate plastic from Plastruct and I think those will work a little better.

Can you give some details on the aftermarket parts you are using?

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

Here it goes then:
The black plastic sheet I'm using do make the doors interior is an X-Ray plate from my dentist, he give some and at least it was free...
The Texaco decals are from a Portuguese company, but I can't tell wich because a friend give them to me...
The Portuguese Rally plates (since 1967 until 2002 I think) are from Carpena Decals, another Portuguese company.
The seatbealts and the other PE elements were from a trade with other modeller, I have no idea where he got those because I never saw it before.
I'll use some CF and Kevlar decals too, from Carpena Decals. They are very good and they have many others to choose from. I'll use the CF on the doors and dashboard, and the Kevlar on the back of the seats.

I love this Airfix models because they are great to modify, and they look nice when done.

The white wheels are from an Airfix 1/43 Lancer WRC, not a match of the real ones from the Texaco car, but Its what I have avaiable...

For the antennas, I'll use some wire or other material, those white ones was just to show...

Regards,
Carlos Jorge

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

The body of one of the models was smashed by the Mail, but I manage to get it right again. This plastic is like butter, very easy to cut but much easier to damage.

The roolcage will be made with Evergreen tubes, 1.2mm diameter.

Tonight I hope to make some more work, I have only 1 week to finish both models...

Regards,
Carlos Jorge

Ugh...those kits look pretty basic man. Good luck detailing them. Looks like you are on to a good start as it is

The roof damage is common to that Impreza kit: I have a British car magazine with that kit review in it and they had the same problem (The author says if it couldn't be fixed, it would be a good representation of one of Petter Solberg's cars....), and I bought one last year from England and it also had the damage as well. It is because of the way the body is packed in the box.

Great work on these little kits so far.

The antennas are far out of scale and should be replaced by wire.

I know, and on the 4th post I said that .

I have about 30 of this Airfix models, the only I don't have is the Peugeot 307 WRC. There are about 5 or 6 Subarus like these on my "box" collection, and none was damaged, only one of those I'm building.

Airfix boxes are very bad, the 1/24 models are the worst. Broken "windows", deformed body... is what you can expect.

Later on the day I'll post more photos, I started painting yesterday.

Regards,
Carlos Jorge

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

Here are one body and chassis with primer aplied. The other body and chassis has already been primed.

I've already glued the side mirrors to the doors, next step is to detail the doors interior side.

Carlos Jorge

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

Two more questions:
- What will you put in the open hood vents and front grille? Any particular type of mesh?

- Did you accidentally break that one front end, or cut it on purpose?

Great start! Are those doors going to work or just be secured open?

Re: 2x Subaru Impreza WRC Airfix 1/43

I'll use a mesh I used before on another Subaru 1/43, instead of the decals that Airfix supplies.

The broken front bumper was an accident, this plastic is very nice to cut but it can break with little strength. Airfix sent me a spare one later, but I started using one from another Subaru model...

The doors will work, at least thats the goal.

In a few hours I'll put here the fotos of the SB rollcage and the body already painted with TS-50 Mica Blue.

Regards,
Carlos Jorge
