Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
I pulled a trailer for first time with my 98 S10 and the right rear brake light and turn signal will not work now. Left turn signal blinks perfect but right side blinks in dash really fast and front light blinks twice as fast, but right rear does not blink or brake light comes on.
I checked right rear bulb, which was okay, but I replaced it anyway. Everything else is okay. I can't figure out where to trace it back to. Found a wire on right side trailer light shorted out, so I figured I've blown something. Thanks to all who read this and maybe someone can point me in right place to look. |

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
might have toasted the relay... i cant tell you off the top of my head where it is, but as a test, swap the left and right, or swap the bad side with the hazard relay... that will let ya know if that is where the problem is.

Is both/all brake lights gone? On right rear turn signal check for 12 volts to it and good ground. Let us know what you find there.

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
Also if you have wired in a trailer plug check wiring and connections to it.

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
First thing I did was check all fuses. All good. Then opened up tailight and checked bulb, which looked good.
I then checked voltage to bulb, I had none. Went ahead and put in new bulb while I was there and mounted light back in bed side. I also got under truck and unplugged pigtail that I bought for trailer lights thinking it might be the problem. Plugged stock harness back together and still nutin'. Been a Honda guy so long I forgot my Chevy roots on trouble shooting. |

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
The T/S flasher unit is used for both sides, so if the left side works, that's not the problem. With the ignition in the RUN position and the right turn signal ON: Check both terminals of fuse #16 (10 amp) in the underhood fuse panel with a test light or voltmeter. It should blink. If only one side blinks, the fuse is bad. If it doesn't blink, the problem is in the multifunction switch or the wiring from the multifunction switch to the fuse. Post your results.

had simular, look at the connection where the trailer harness connects to the brake/turn in truck harness the lamp side of harness was'nt getting 12v (the connection was faulty on mine)

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
Dumb question.
Where's the multifunction switch? Thanks, Ron |

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
The multifunction switch is in the steering column cover, the turn signal lever attaches to it.

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
Lot of stuff built into that one switch.
Tell us where you are at on testing. Have you been to the right rear turn signal fuse and checked for voltage both sides and flashing or just on or off? If not to test the multi function switch you will need to get a wiring diagram on it and find the wiring harness on bottom of steering column. Check and see if you have right rear turm signal voltage out of it.

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
COMING OUT OF MULTI FUNCTION SWITCH.
Dark Green/white wire is right turn and yellow wire is left rear brake and turn signal. A 12-15 voltage volt meter or a old type bulb test light will check it for you. Good Luck and Let us know what you find.

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
Man, I really appreciate all the help.
So the turn signal switch is now called multifunction switch. I'll get my repair manual out today and chase it down. All my GM work has mostly been from 60's and 70's. Somewhere in the late 70's, I got on foreign stuff, but I'm also back to GM now. I've built half dozen streetrods in last 18 years with fuel injection, overdrives and such, but all with basic aftermarket wiring harnesses like I grew up on. I'll see what I can do today and get back. Again, thanks a million for all the tips. |

Re: Can't resolve turn signal/brake light problem.
Yes.
Dimmer an washer wiper and and turn signal and cruise are all made in one switch. If one part of quits it is replace the hole thing. But check that fuse for power both sides and wiring first. Some switches will cost a arm and a leg
