96 Jetta Electrical Problem turn Signals/Brake lights

I have a problem with my turn signals. When I put my left turn signal on the both brake lights flash and the right turn signal flashes at the same time as the brake light and visa versa for the right turn signal. Also when I turn on a turn signal and apply the brakes the lights shut off. Has anyone had similar issues with their electrical.

Does your car have a non-factory installed trailer light connection? They sometimes mess things up installing trailer lights. Check to make sure you have correct bulbs. Make sure your bulbs are installed correctly, two filliment bulbs can be installed 180 degrees off if you're not careful.
