jaykay, I've held off commenting until I read through the entire thread to date. Your work is not only outstanding, but built to a higher level then most of us mere mortals can even dream of. Looking forward to finally seeing the competed model, if one can just call what you've created a model. It's more like a masterpiece.

This is an amazing builld! I really enjoy that it is the Jordan and not another Ferrari, McLaren or Williams Honda. No offense to the builders of those teams, it's just nice to see a different team represented with such a superb build!

Hi everyone

It’s been quite a while again since my last update. I had other things to do lately ( “real life“ :-) so progress was very slow once more. Anyway…I have something new to show finally.

I’ll start with the last “biggie” in the engine bay, the induction system. Originally, when I started this build I just wanted to put an “air filter” on the Tamiya piece, to cover up the rudimentary intake trumpets etc. In hindsight I should have stuck to that plan :-)
But when I finally got there I thought that after all the other silly details I had done up to that point, it would be odd to not do the induction system. I ended up building it four times…
Initially I started by modifying the Tamiya kit part. That worked nicely, until I tried to fit some scratch made trumpets in the tray and came to realize that the part was way to narrow to fit the trumpets plus the injection system inside.
So, after toying around with measurements I made a completely new tray and cover from 0,25mm styrene sheet and other materials, painted and decaled it and so on. Everything was fine until I tried to fit the almost finished and assembled part under the cowling…..you guessed right… it didn’t fit anymore :-(
Somehow at some point I had gotten the measurements wrong and it was now too wide. I still can’t explain why. It was only about 1mm too wide but that was a crucial one and there was no way to just cut out a slice or something to make it fit.
So on I went for No.3. I built it like the second version but a bit smaller and with some improvements ( I thought ). It worked o.k. but a couple of things just didn’t look as good as on the previous one. This went on until the final assembly of all the little pieces when I decided that it just wasn’t good enough and to start all over again.
This ( fourth ) time I took extra care to build everything precise and clean and that’s what I’m gonna show you :-)

I made the parts from a mix of Renshape and styrene sheet, plus 0,1mm strip metal for the frame on the tray that holds the lid with the air filter, and turned aluminium bits for the bottom of each “trumpet” to represent the throttle slides.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/190scratchedengineinductionparts.jpg

The parts were then individually primed, sanded, painted, CF-decaled, cleared, sanded and polished. In the next picture the trumpets have already received their aluminium bottoms and been installed in the tray.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/191inductionwithpaintandCF.jpg

After that I installed the injection system made from metal tubes and rods, turned aluminium bits, wires and R.B.motion A/N-fittings.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/192fuelinjectionsysteminstalled.jpg

The proportions are not exactly as on the original. I had to make my version of the induction a bit short so the spacing between the trumpets wouldn’t look too wrong. I still don’t know if the Tamiya engine is too long, or the cowling too narrow or if it’s really just a matter of material thicknesses being too big in scale.

Anyway, with that sub assembly ready I could mount it on top of the engine and get on with cables and stuff around it. In the next picture you can already see some additional parts on the right hand side of the tray.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/193inductionmountedonengine.jpg

Then I could mount the ignition system ( at least I think that’s what these parts are ). There’s an electronic unit with two cylinders on top of it which are connected to the distributors by cables. These have to be the ignition coils I guess. In the next picture you see the parts I built from styrene, renshape and etched bits in front of the Tamiya kit part prior to painting.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/194ignitionsystemparts.jpg

And next up two more pictures of the finished parts in their place on the engine.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/196ignitionsysteminstalledleftside.jpg

Thanks a lot guys!

Nick, i'm glad this build inspired you and made you come to the forum! That's what i hope to achieve, because when i got into this, others and their WIP threads did the same for me :-)

So here we go again, and this time the break wasn’t even that long :-)
I had a bit of a wiring and plumbing session for this update. I started on the left engine bank and installed the fuel line that runs from the fuel pump below the left exhaust ( hidden by the heat shield ) to the ignition system on top of the engine. I used 0,5mm styrene rod and painted it Alclad white aluminium.
Right over it there’s a fat black wire running along the camcover. The big plugs are modified TopStudio items with one of my etched parts. The yellow markings are bits of decal.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/197fuellineandcableadded.jpg

Same thing on the right hand side, only there are thin wires with three small plugs :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/198plugsandcablesonleftcamcover.jpg

Then I installed the wires and hoses on top of the tank. The fittings are all custom made from aluminium and were airbrushed with clear yellow and blue. For the blue I’m now using Zero Candy Electric Blue which is much better to work with than the Revell enamel paint I used before.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/199cablesandhosesontopoftank.jpg

All the ends of the cables and hoses that are not visible are hidden in front of the engine or below the induction tray. On the reference pictures you can’t see where they really end so I didn’t care either :-) I also left some small cables off that you can see in some pictures lurking in the “darker” corners, because I didn’t know where they start and end and just throwing something in there wouldn’t change a thing really.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/200tankdetailsrightview.jpg

One cable that you can see well is running along the left side up to the roll bar. That’s the emergency cut off for the engine. The red wire doesn’t look very reassuring on the original car either :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/201emergencyenginestopcable.jpg

With the tank done I went towards the back of the car and installed two black braided hoses.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/202oiloverflowhosesinstalled.jpg

These were used to dump excess oil from the engine and gearbox on the following cars afaik….common practice but not nice :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/203oilhosesatrearend.jpg

The end pieces are made from 1mm brass tube and the hoses are held together with thin stripes of black electrical tape ( glued with superglue ).

For the last piece I went back to the front of the Jordan. I added some etched screw heads to the cover over the front damper. I drilled little holes and glued them flush with the surface. The antenna is made from 0,1mm wire and mounted on a base made from an etched washer and a black bit of styrene.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/204antennaonfrontdampercover.jpg

I don’t have any picture of the underside of that lid but there must be some kind of cable and plug to connect the antenna, so I made them up. Only, there’s no plug to connect it to besides the damper. There was simply no room left for one:-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/205frontdampercoverunderside.jpg

That’s it for the moment. There are a couple of hoses left to do at the back of the car but then it will be time for the rear wing and cowling… and there are some issues I’ll have to solve with those. That may take some time :-)
Thanks for watching!

Mmmmm...lovely stuff! Following a project like this is so worthwhile - it doesn't matter whether our own skills are capable of repeating such work, but it just shows what can be done. Often you find inspiration from one element of a build - a new way to do a particular detail, for example - but at other times you just soak up and enjoy the whole thing. This is one of those times...

All the best!

Hi

Here’s another quick update with the „final“ bits of the engine bay.
After thinning them, painting and decaling I installed the little panels that sit between the rear suspension arms. On the Jordan they each held a little oil radiator in most races. I didn’t do anything silly with the kit radiators but besides some cleanup I had to get rid of ejector pin marks on the inside radiator grids ( very clever placement Tamiya….not!)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/206oildradiatorsandsidepanelsinstalled.jpg

On top of each radiator I put a little “carbonized” panel as on the real car and then connected them with braided line and R.B.Motion A/N-fittings. For Spa the additional radiator in the rear wing support was also connected. I’m not really sure about the connection of the right hand side radiator and where the oil hose should run from there because I have no useful picture of that part. There should be an oil pump somewhere but I don’t know that, so I decided to just connect the radiator to the gear box like on the left side.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/207oildradiatorsoverview.jpg

With those final hoses installed I made the front undertray supports. They are 1mm metal strips with etched bolt heads running from the engine cam covers to the floor.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/208frontundertraysupport.jpg

At the rear those supports are a bit more sophisticated. They are made from 8 individual parts each ( metal tube, hex bolts and etched parts ) and connect the diffusor with the little orange sub frames on the rear wing support.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/209rearundertraysupports.jpg

So this is it for the engine bay details. I’m now missing the rear wing, the rear view mirrors and the cowling. The cowling currently gives my quite a headache. The front fixing pins don’t work anymore as they should. I shortened them a bit too much/early for all the paint and decals that went on the model. I tried to fix that last weekend but only made matters worse. Now I have to find a way to fix that without ruining the look too much. I could just leave the model open, but then I’m not yet ready to admit defeat :-)
Anyway, that’s it for today. For the last picture there’s an overview of the ( open…) finished engine bay :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/210enginebayoverview.jpg

@maxone....which pictures, which forum? :-) Edit... Ho trovato. Nessun problema :-)

Yet another update :-)
I actually managed to fix the cowling issue. It’s not as perfect as I would have wished but this is probably as good as I can get this one :-)
I made new fixing points at the front of the sidepods on the car so the short pins of the cowling work again ( just ). The shutlines are not as tight and crisp as I hoped but still better than anything I have done before. There’s room for improvement and lessons learned for coming builds.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/211cowlingfinished.jpg

I managed to re-glue the right tip of the cowling that had broken off again during the “fixing hassle” without it showing too much. There’s still a paint chip on an edge of the right side that I may try to fix ( better than I have done at the moment ).
After that I mounted the blue panels in the side air outlets and decorated the cowling with etched DZUS from SMS. I sanded these thinner to about 0,1mm but they still sit too much “on top” of the paint for my liking. That’s how far I’ll go on this build though :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/212cowlingfinishedinside.jpg

The inside of the cowling also received the finishing touches. After a layer of black paint ( annoying masking job for that….) I put on some CF decals, followed by a layer of matt enamel clear mixed with matt black to tone down the CF pattern ( more of the same masking :-) Around the exhausts I added BMF heat shielding and gave that a little bit of heat staining with Alclad transparent yellow.

So here’s a picture with the cowling attached. It really has to be wrestled in place but it stays where it’s supposed to be :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/213cowlingmountedcloseup.jpg

I have to leave a bigger tolerance for the paint on future builds. It looks though that the Jordan has one of the most complicated cowling shapes besides the Leyton House in the Tamiya 1:20 range. So this should be easier to do on other cars.
Here’s a final picture of the whole car. I actually like the look better without the cowling so it’ll probably stay open most of the time :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/214cowlingmounted.jpg

This leaves “just” the rear wing and mirrors to do. Looks like I might finish something this year :-)

JayKay - this is truly amazing work - not to criticize, but do the F-1 cars really use Dzus fasteners for the panels? just asking if that is correct for the cars of that era? This car and all other F1 cars in the early 1990's did use Dzus fasteners.

Great build. Should go in a museum!!

No problem at all :-)
I'm not sure if all cars of the time used DZUS but the Jordan 191 did and they are placed according to reference pictures. They used quite a few actually, especially at the back. My guess is, they helped holding those little panels with the gear box oil radiators more than holding the cowling down on the car :-)

Welcome to the 30th and in fact the final building progress update :-)

As I mentioned in the last one only the rearwing and mirrors were left to do, so here come the mirrors first. The kit mirrors were the usual Tamiya pieces and a bit chunky.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/215kitmirrors.jpg

I thinned and reshaped the mirror housings to look more like the real ones and cut off the arms. For these I made some new ones from aluminium that are held to the cockpit sides with brass rivets. After painting the mirror housings Zero Gold Leaf red and 2K clear I added polished nickel silver mirror faces and etched rivets on top as “adjusters”.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/216modifiedmirrors.jpg

In the next two pictures they are in their places on the car.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/217mirrorsmountedfront.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/218mirrorsmountedback.jpg

So on to the rear wing. That thing has been in the works for a long time in fact. It took me quite some time to clear and sand/polish all the individual bits after decaling. Here you see them laid out.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/219wingelements.jpg

The wing elements are all fixed to the endplates with epoxy glue and metal rivets as locator pins and for added strength. I reshaped the heads, drilled little holes and painted them where necessary.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/220wingassembled.jpg

Putting the wing together with all those parts was still a challenge and I learned the hard way to do more serious test fitting before painting next time :-) It’s not as clean and precise in some spots as I had planned but I managed to fix most of my mishaps and will live with the result :-)
So here it is mounted on the car with two tiny drops of epoxy glue again.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/221wingmounted.jpg

Time for two views with all the bits attached and open engine bay…

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/222wingmountedsideview.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/223overview.jpg

… and finally the finished car all buttoned up :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/224finishedsideview.jpg

I started doing the artwork for the photoetched parts around Christmas 2008, so this build has almost taken two years ( with some breaks of course :-)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/jaykay640/Jordan%20191/225finished3Qrearview.jpg

It is in fact the first 1:20 F1 build I have ever finished. ( Admittedly it’s by far not the first one I started though :-)

JayKay, congrats on finally finishing your 1st 1/20 scale build.

I've followed it from day one, and have been in awe of just how far advanced your skills are, especially compared to my modest level of modeling. Your Jordan 191 is truly in a class of it's own.

Takes scale modelling to a whole new level... More detail than some 1/12th scale kits, amazing rendition, probably the ultimate 1/20th scale Jordan 191 ever..!!! Simply stunning..!!!

I LOVE this! This is the payoff of every bit of care taken through the whole process. It's now that jig really makes itself worth the extra work. This is a beaty and it has been a true pleasure watching your struggles (which really desn't look that hard as it must have been) to come to this point. I'm almost sad we won't have any more updates on this one as it is a favourite subject of mine.

My biggest worry now is how to implement all this in the 1/24 scale...

Many thanks for sharing this with us! I'm looking forward to your next thread when it eventually turns up. You have deserved to take some time off, though, so no preassure... Enjoy the holidays!

Best regards,
Johan

Simply outstanding! Helped to raise the bar in the F1 modelling realm a few notches above reachable, Lol!
