DashBoard Painting

I just bought an 03 cavalier from a relative and I had to take off a XM satellite radio holder that had been glued to the dash. I heated it with a blowdryer, and it came right off. Unfortunatly, it left an indention in the dash. I was wondering if taking off the dash and sanding the indented part could make it dissapear. I read some other topics here, and decided I might as well sand and paint the entire dash. Which leads me to my second quesiton. Do you need a paint gun to effectively paint the dash and make it look good? I don't want to spend over $200 unless it's completely neccesary. Domo Arigato for your help.

no, you dont need a paintgun. Its your choice whether you want to go in that direction. I used spraycans. Im gonna say depending on the depth of the indentation... varies sanding may take it out, but i doubt it.

I understood "how" to repaint it, I was just wondering whether a paint gun would be better and if sanding could get the indention out. I have yet to paint it, but if it doesnt come out, I'll probley put something over it.

Fiberglass would be a good thing if you have to go over the messed up area, but now-a-days you can probably find a good many in teh junk yard that are in good condition

u could try sanding. if u wannt to paint it then go to auto zone if u want black or anything and go/ ask for vynal paints. they have some good plain colors. or u can just use reg. paint like they are saying.

Is it better to paint your dashboard or dye it? I dont want it to crack or peel. I was told to sand it down then put primer on then paint it. Buts someone else thought I should dye it. I have a black dash and want to make it a light pink. Let me know what you think is best. thanks for your help

I have pics but new to this and not sure how to add them. I have a myspace which has some pics as well. Under cheryl michalak. I saw what you painted so now I am not sure what to paint. I dont want it to look stupid. So I will see. thanks again

Well for my first car doing graphics I think it came out good. No I dont think too many guys would like the color pink. I just put a graphic on the back bumper. I named the car Knight Fox so that is what is on the back. Again thanks and have a nice evening. cheryl feel free to drop me a line on myspace

why is knight fox a ford focus?
seems like every near miss accident i almost get into... is with a focus.
however i've never been in an accident in my 4 years of driving. so don't you go forming opinions about me.

Well I named her Knight Fox for a couple of reasons. One she is black and when I think of black I think of a Knight in shinning armor. Also one of my favorite cars back in the day was the Knight RIder. You may not be old enough to remember that but it was a cool car. Fox is because I am a foxy lady. So I named her Knight Fox. All in all I think she is a hot car. Its my first car that I have done with graphics and such.
I am still debating on the painting or dye for the interior. I have a few calls into someone places to see what they recommend. I bought some paint and did a test sample and I like the results. But I am concerned that in the heat the paint will start to chip and peel. I want to do it once if you know what I mean. I hope this answered your question. I have to say I think she is looking good considering she is my first one. What you think? ttyl Cheryl

Cheryl my car sits in the sun for hours every day with the sun beating down on the painted interior. it does nothing to it. no cracks, no peels no nothing. so i really dont think you have a problem. just make sure that you clear all of it after you paint. :)

EDIT: lance if i paint the intake what all should i paint?? from the TB box to the filter box? or what??

Well, if you're throwing in a new motor anyway, then just go for the gold and paint the whole damn thing from the Tb cover to the intake box, it's like getting your head shaved, you can cut/shave/dye whatever you want because you're shaving it all off anyway!

my99cavy the blue looks great. The piece in your engine is the radiator bracket. You should think of painting other things in the engine as well. Not necessarily the engine itself but i agree about the intakes. I started taking the interior panels off tonight. I wont be painting til the week of the 7th when I am on vacation. I want to do everything at the same time. I mean dying not painting. That way I only have to clean the gun out once. I am going to paint the upper parts of the door, the console, and the instruement panel. And probally the vents as well. That way it all goes together. I dont want to paint the seats or fabric them that is why I am keeping the door handles black and the lower part of the doors grey. I found someone who will matchthe dye color to my graphic that is already on the car. cool huh!!!! Well once done I will definitely put up some pics and see what you guys think. thanks for all the help. chow cheryl

Thanks guys. Like I said I need the help. I am new to this and dont want to do it wrong or have it look stupid. my99 your right I couldnt wait for vacation. Tonight I took the front door panels off and removed the console. From what I have been told dying is so much easier than painting. No sanding required. :) Once I get it done I will post some pics.
Now for my next question....I know I havent finished the dying but I like to think ahead. If I dye the upper parts of the doors, console and the instruement panel plus the bracket around vents. What else should I do to the interior. Should I put in some neon lights? or is that what they say is rice??? not sure what rice is but think it is bad. Well let me know what you guys think. In case you havent seen my car it is black with hot pink graphics. I am dying the interior parts above hot pink which matches the graphics. Let me know.
thanks again for your help

Rice is like adding neons to every possible place, or putting an obnoxiously large wing on the trunk, or spinner hub caps, or decals/stickers like NOS and you not having nos in your car, it's basically taking the tuner/fast and furious theme to the extremes in a very cheap manner. It's like tricking out an american car like an imported fast and furious car and completely over doing it. Since you brought it up, I personally don't mind interior neons, I think they're really cool and it adds flava, my favorite part of them would be having a switch to flip on and off mounted in the dash lol. I plan on doing red neon in mine, under the dash and under the front seats so the rear floor glows. If you like it and want to do it though, don't worry about what other people think about it, if everybody worried about being too rice or what other people think then the scene would never change and it would've died out a long time ago.

cherylumm yeah you can do some neons on the inside. under the dash or under the 2 front seats, you could do some pink race style seats, get reverse glo gauges, pink shift knob and pink shift boot, pink e-brake. really it all depends on what you like and how much you want to do.
