cheryl923
07-29-2006, 09:01 PM
Guys this was soooooo easy. Thanks for the comments. I didnt do the airbag because I wasnt sure how to take off the cover without setting the air bag off.

Not sure where everyone is from but I got the dye custom mixed at West Springfield auto parts. You dont need much. I got a pint of white and a pint of custom made pink. You need the wax adhevsive remover, a can of adhesive which you can get at advance auto parts or probally any automotive store in your area. I will get you the actual names just dont feel like going down to the garage right now. :)

First you use the remover on the parts you want to tape off. Then you cover the parts you dont want to dye with paper. The areas you want to dye wipe down with the remover. Once you have gotten all the pieces done take a tacky cloth (u can get at advance) and remove any dust that has gotten on it since you started the process. Then use the adhesive. Make sure though that your dye is ready because you want to put your first coat down within 10 min of the adhesive. The dye is used with a paint gun. I used a air paint gun. The first coat you will probally still see the original color thats okay. Let dry for 5 min. Put second coat on. The parts should look white and have no clue there was another color underneath. I only did two coats for my parts. Plus I ran out of dye after the second coat. Wait half an hour then apply your color. Two coats again. Thats it. No sanding like if you were going to paint. Like I said I will get the actual names of the product I used tomorrow. But it was soooooo easy ...... I would highly recommend it over painting.

:sunglasse .............. If you need anything else let me know. Monday I will try and type up a step by step instead of the paragraph version above if you want me to. stay cool......

Is the texture still on it or is it smooth?

cheryl923
07-29-2006, 09:36 PM
The texture is still on it. I didnt want it smooth. I wanted it to look like it came out of the factory that way. THe base is smooth and I didnt want it to look smooth from top to bottom.

I forgot to mention..... the cost was about $110 to do. The prep took me a few hours to get ready and a couple of hours to do the dying. I was able to prep, dye, and install everything in a day. It took a few hours to take things out. BUt then again this is my first "trick" car that I have done.

If I can do it you guys should be ableto do it in less time. THe more I do I am sure I will get better at. It looks almost like a factory job I think. I am very pleased with the outcome. fyi I live in Conn. . Let me know if you need or want anything else.

Oh yeah I almost forgot...... what else should I do??????

thanks again

how much is an air paint gun...?

this sounds like i could use a spray can and do the same thing...

when i heard dye, i was thinking she dipped the pieces in color or something..

Lances133
07-30-2006, 01:39 AM
Yeah, and I'd rather sand it all down and what-not so it ends up looking like the whole interior is fiberglass

Young Chuck D
07-30-2006, 10:42 AM
screw sanding but um...... i feel like i've been jip'd

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 11:34 AM
A paint gun costs about 90 bucks or so. You can get one at advance auto or autozone or any other automotive store. You can get spray cans with dye. There is a company called g2 that makes the basic colors. IF you want a particular color you have to have it mixed hence the paint gun is needed. If you search in google for g2 interior dye you will find some cites to check out.

It was a very simple process. Not as timing consuming as painting requires. You can smooth it out by sanding first I chose not to as I wanted it to look more factory direct. Or you could put more dye on it to smooth it out. But I would sand it first. good luck....

hi i dont mean 2 be in ur forum but i have found you's 2 be the most informational on dashboard painting... plz tell me 2 leave if u dont think im welcome lol... by the way i just want to know wats the difference between dyeing it to paint it... dashboard that is

Lances133

Not too much, either one's more expensive then the other or one has more work. Either way, you're both spraying a colored substance on.

damn im not on for a day and all this shit happens lol but damn cheryl, that looks really really good. im jealous lol j/k

EDIT: well its seems like us cavy guys are the best to talk to when it comes to painted interior lol so we do have some good information once and awhile haha

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 05:45 PM
These guys are great. At least they respond and dont make you feel stupid for asking a question. And they dont talk alot of bs stuff either.

As far as the difference between painting and the dye....... painting you have to do alot of sanding then priming then painting. Painting if not done correctly will chip and peel. Especially if you are in a warmer climate. Paint does not expand on plastics therefore it cracks and chips. To dye it the dye soaks into the plastic or leather surface that you are doing.

The dying process is alot less time consuming and much easier to do. I have left instructions on how to do it above. If you need more of a one step two step process I will type it up tomorrow or I can email it to you. just give me your email address.

THey posted my pics above as well. mine is the hot pink color. (not too many guys would use pink....except one  )

thanks my99cavy. I think it looks damn hot. Not bad for my first tricked out car huh???? lol yeah :iagree: not bad at all for your first time messing with graphics and dye. if you didnt mention that it was your first time doing both i would have thought you were doing it for years. but do you have any plans for the car??

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 06:29 PM
your welcome. ...... and thanks back for the compliment. I want to put her into show but have not yet decided. I have some 18 inch rims and tires I still need to put on and also an undercar light kit to put on. I may change out the muffler so it makes some noise but havent decided for sure yet. Also I was think of putting some neons inside the car like underneath the dash and maybe the seats. But again I havent decide yet. Plus that has some electrical things and I am not sure I could do it. Then again I didnt think I could do the graphics and dying either.

I have heard of a car show in pa I think it is called car aisle. not sure. I dont want to go to one until I think she is ready and I dont get laughed at. But I do have to say I already have my "outfit" that I would wear to the show.

thanks again and take care. Any suggestions let me know. :)

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 06:35 PM
you guys have any threads going for how to put neon undercar lights on? Looking over the directions looks like I would need a degree in either japanese or :banghead: . something.....

oh i forgot.... anyone got any ideas about an amp or speakers? I was thinking of putting some in the trunk. Not sure. what u think?

my99cavy
07-30-2006, 06:51 PM
well i would def throw on those rims. depending on what they look like they should really set off the car. with the neons i would also throw those in the car and do the underbody kit. we havent had a thread yet about underbody neons so i couldnt tell ya. i havent installed one either so i dont know where to start.

with the audio i would post a thread here http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=675

the guys that hang around there^ really know what there talking about. basically it really depends on how much you want to spend, how much bass you want etc. etc.

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 06:59 PM
Thanks for the info. I just posted a thread so I will wait and see what they say. I dont want to put too much into it as I had a friend who spent 4000 on amps and speakers and his car was broken into. They didnt get anything but still. I would be pissed if I spent that kind of money just to be ripped off.

Any thoughts on where to post for the neons? I have yet to find even where you start a new thread. except the link you gave me for the sound system.

thanks

07-30-2006, 08:55 PM
okay I am now going to sound like the typical lady.... not sure what you mean by performance mods. I was thinking of changing the muffler and also thinking of putting in an air intake filter but not sure I have the room. I was told to put a turbo in it but not sure I want to. I wanted to do something under the hood in pink but havent found anything I can do. WIth a newer engine everything is so complicating. With the two older cars I restored I was able to change out wires, cap, etc air parts etc. Todays cars I dont even know where to begin. Thats why I keep asking you guys for some help.

I tried to post two new threads and one said I was in the wrong forum and deleted me. The second one basically called me an idiot. :frown: so I have pretty much given up on asking for assistance. I will just figure out by trail and error. I mean how bad can i screw up. I have done pretty well so far.

I am really at a loss for what else to do. I dont want to post again and look stupid. This may be my first car to trick out but I still should get some respect. You know. Okay I am done b-itching. Hope that answered you question. ttyl

an intake and new muffler are good places to begin.

do you plan on keeping the car long?

my99cavy
07-30-2006, 10:26 PM
if you want to do something in the engine bay pink take some pics of it and throw them up here so i could see what it looks like. yeah i would start with a CAI (cold air intake) and exhaust. turbo is always a good idea just a bit pricey. all depends on if you want to put alot into this car. sorry you had bad luck with trying to post in other places.

but if I were you at this point, do the interior neons, underbody neons, intake, exhaust and you could always throw in some pink race style seats if you wanted. also put in some nice headlights/tail lights and the blueish bulbs. you could tint the windows, put those rims you have sitting around on. either a CF (carbon fiber) hood or just an aftermarket metal hood. thats just some stuff lol

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 10:27 PM
Yes I plan on keeping her. I want to turn her into a show car. I have not been able to find an air intake on ebay that I thought would work. I found one muffler but wasnt sure it would fit and I dont want to have to make shift it. But that is probally what I will have to do.

cheryl923
07-30-2006, 10:30 PM
I am not sure on the pink seats. That might be too much pink. I will take some pics tomorrow of the engine compartment and you can tell me what your thoughts are. Thanks for the advice. I will start searching ebay to see what i can find on there.

yeah but my only problem is she is a 2006 and there arent too many after market places that have parts for her. That is why I might have to make shift something. But I do awesome body work so an exhaust cant be that bad to do. lol

The second rule of life, if you cant find it, make it. Im sure an intake wouldnt be that hard to make, just gotta explore a little into the engine and see what room there is and what you can do. Haha you can even ask notaricajustfasta (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=440995) and show him what you got, since he is into designing cai's, this could be a fun project.

my99cavy

there is always room to put an intake in. if worse comes to worse you could just take out all the old plastic intake and just replace it with an aluminum intake or whatever you make it out of. you have to think positive cheryl
