Any body have any interest in a contest featuring LeMans cars? I don't know any details, just seeing if there is any interest.

I may be interested, it depends on what type of time frame you're thinking of as well as what sort of rules.
Only cars that raced at LeMans itself or endurance racers in general?

Ooh yeah I'd be in. Although only if plenty of time is given to get something acceptable built.
How about something like build the LM winner of the year you were born  Just kidding, I think the wider the net, the more entries you'd get.

As I said, depend of the time frame. I currently have a Porsche GT3 and Ferrari 360 Leman, but they won't hit the desk before end of the summer or even this fall

I'm interested, if the deadline is the 2005 Le Mans Saturday, or something like that. (meaning I need a lot of time.)
And I propose both historically realistic and phantom racer sub-classes, besides common ones like box stock, modified etc...

I've just ordered kit's of every car that started the race this year... I'll be building the whole of the grid (hopefully before next years race). Wish me luck, I think I'm gonna need it!

Yup. All kits will be PM (where available) except the Ferraris which will be BBR as they tend to do a better job of them. Any that I can't get from those two will be who ever makes them, even if that means diecasts (a last resort to fill the holes).
First couple of kits should arrive in the next couple of days, and then as and when they are released.
It's something I've wanted to do since I went to the race for the first time in '96. The grid looked so good this year, I couldn't resist.

OK, I'm in... I agree classes for scale is a good idea, and I would say classes for open and closed cars would be good as well. Plus the car must have raced (or practised?) at Le Mans, not just be of a type that raced there. Just my thoughts, feel free to shoot me down in flames!

Any more interest in this?
What would be really great is to wait until we can get a dedicated motorsport modelling forum up and running. The idea has been doing the rounds for a while now. Just PMed Igor about it.
Given the interest so far is on the low side might it be best to limit the number of categories? As well as allow some strictly non-Le Mans cars enter? I was thinking of Global Endurance Series or Japanese GT series cars. For instance if we limit it to pure Le Mans starters then cars like the Tamiya Mercedes CLK-GTR will be ineligible, as would the Croc Audi I have on the bench.
Not that that is a bad thing, we can be as elite as we wanna!

To my eyes, 2 categories would be best:
1- The cars that have raced at the Le Mans 24 hours.
2- The cars belonging to Endurance series and GT series.
No scale categorie. But scale should be given by the modeler, just in case some people might not recognize a 1/43 kit pic... Or a 1/12 one...
Hope there will be Skylines!

We could also divide again the category of cars which have raced at le mans into GTP and Group C categories. GTP is the recent class for closed cockpit cars e.g. Toyota Gt-One, Nissan R390. Group C ws the same thing basically but ran in the eighties and early nineties e.g. Mazda 787B, Nissan R89C, Porsche 962 etc.

I'm thinking it should be 4 categories as follows
1. Open cars
2. Closed cars
3. Resin/Aftermarket
4. Styrene
This would cover everyone and every car made regardless of class!
Of course you may want to seperate that into some form of scale (i.e. 1:24/25-1:43-1:87)...but maybe not.
Now who's gonna do the Deutsch-Bonnet and Panhard?...;-)>
Bill
p.s. I'm in!
p.p.s. What about phantom LM competitors? i.e. A Michelin Skyline GT? or a Taisan Boxter GT?...;-)>

We don't have any details as yet, feel free to suggest some :)
There are probably a few areas we'll need to agree on:
1. Time frame - in a couple of months or next year? One thing we'll need to consider is not clashing with the AF Model of the Year Comp should it be run in its traditional January slot.
2. Scope - purely real Le Mans competitors or some wider net?
3. One overall category or subcategories?
4. Will we allow older models or do something like the recent Custom Competition where all entries were built within a specified timeframe with progress threads?
:dunno:

3. a. Open cockpit
b. Closed cockpit
c. 1:24/25
d. 1:43rd
e. Previous Tamiya Modeler of the Year...;-)>
4. Only newer models with build diaries. Which would not only be really cool but could also teach us alot also!

What about separate categories for curbside and full detail? Really not fair for a curbside resin kit to compete against a full detailed Tamiya. Both can be done excellently.

Sounds good to me... I think the curbside/detail thing is not so much of an issue as there is a 1:43 category - my main concern was comparing 1:43 to 1:24 as they are two quite different things.

3. I quite like the subcategories Zeljko had for his rally contest.

Don't forget, the more category you make, the more winner you will have, and the more price you will need to give. Since we don't have any supplyer, we should stay with few category, or we will end like:
Congrats, you won the Contest. You got a detail wire set worth 3$.. :eek7:
No matter the size.
No matter resin or not (what we do with carr that are plastic with few resin part ?)

That's why I've proposed just 2 categories:
-the car that have raced Le Mans.
-the proto and GT cars, close to Le Mans specifications: CLK-GTR, JGTC Skylines, etc...
Whatever the scale, resin or plastic... or wood, detailed or curbside...
There are so many types of cars that have raced LeMans that we could choose to have only the first categorie!...
And see, maybe,

I would like to participate in this contest, so my 2 cents ...
I like the long timeframe as well. Deadline of Le Mans 2005 would be sufficient and meaningful.
I think we should stick with cars that raced at Le Mans, on the starting grid, put down at least a lap. If we added other endurance races/series, then it wouldn't be a Le Mans contest, which is why this thread was first posted.
We should have a 1:24 and 1:43 category, but separating for curbside/engine or resin/plastic would make too many categories. We should keep it simple. Besides I would guess the majority would be building 1:24, engine, plastic (I will be). And Vric's comment about categories/prizes is also valid.

I also think we should keep it Le Mans models only. And that the contest should finish up at the start of the race next year. And I don't even think it should be broken up into classes at all... Opening it up to other race series would make it, I don't know, not a Le Mans contest? But then, I wouldn't mind seeing some killer JGTC or DTM models.

Seriously, I know we all like long deadlines, but I'm thinking 4 month or .25 of a full year is long enough.
Also what are the benefits of making it simply a LM contest? Won't this actually EXCLUDE some modelers who can't/wont/don't build Le Sarthe cars, but do build other sports car racers?????
Of course this is just one idiot's opinion ;-)>

The main idea was Le Mans contest. Just stick with this idea. There is so many car that raced to Le Mans, if someone don't want to built one of this kit, then send your kit to an other contest. We always exclude peoples on a theme contest

Le Mans runs enough variety of cars that I think pretty much anybody who popped on this thread could come up with one. If I want to enter my JGTC stuff in a contest, then it would be in a general RACE CAR or JGTC contest, etc. Let's leave it as LM only.

I love that idea. I´m just trying to get my act together. Somebody make the rules and the deadline and we all can go ahead and start the battle for the title.

Cool, we seem to have fair bit of interest, maybe it’s time to start firming things up and making decisions. I’d be willing to co-ordinate the comp and maybe put up a kit as a prize. However, if anybody else would like to take the reigns that would be great too.
I’ve also wondered if we could have two separate draws here. A pure Le Mans comp for fresh builds with a deadline of next year’s race. As well as a more general competition for existing builds with a deadline 2 or 3 months away. Of course now we have Mr Bil Attridge on board the competition will be for second place :)
Perhaps we could develop an annual themed competition that we hold every year? Le Mans for 2005, F1 for 2006, etc? With a deadline of the middle of the year to keep us out of step with the AFMOTY.
Another point of discussion: How would be best to judge it? Or do we even need a winner :)
