Hey guys, today i saw these two different Airbrush's. I saw a Tamiya one which i already know Tamiya is good in almost if not everything they make and i saw the Testors Aztek one. Which one do you guys prefer. Which one has the better bang for the buck :p
The Tamiya one seemed a bit old im not sure what model it was same with the Aztek. I just want some General Information.
Thanks,

I've heard that Iwata builds Tamiya airbrushes, if that is true then they would be the way to go. Most people tend not to like the Aztek, it does come with a lifetime warranty though. I have an Iwata Revolution and couldn't recommend it highly enough. For large jobs I also have a Paashe H single action, basic but excellent.

I think it was RallyRaider who suggested to me to get an Iwata airbrush, so I did because i did a search and could not find a negative word spoke about the brand. Very simple to use, can be used for large and small areas without any problems, and they look cool as hell.
If you would like I Have several links to places that sell them the cheapest, I also Know where to get a nice quiet compressor for $99.99 and that includes a tank!

Thanx jswillmon and RallyRaider for your suggestions. Im leaning more towards the Tamiya one, i just gotta go to the store and check out how much it cost, i think this one was a Single Action Airbrush and used a can, very simple one. I believe i saw a 50 dollar sticker on it but it was soo high up there in the rack that i just left the prices to my imaginations :iceslolan .
o and jswillmon can you tell me where you know of a good compressor, i saw the new Testors one, the blue one for 150. Caught my attention but then again i don't know if its the right thing or the best for its price.

I've heard bad things about the Aztek ones. From everyone.
I have a Badger 200, a cheap (almost $100) single-action brush and it's given me pretty good results. One of the better inexpensive brushes.

I love my Aztec. Had a 470 since they first came out and while the body looks crappy now (coverd in paint) it still works great. The self contained haed makes clean up a doddle, and is cheap and easy to replace if it does clog up. To be fair I've not used an Iwata brush, but I might try oone later this year...

I got it for christmas, It was also suggested to me by a member here in the same thread rallyraider suggested This Airbrush (http://www.arttalk.com/iwata/revolution-cr-lg.jpg).
The compressor is very quiet, comes with a regulator, and is useful for many other things than just airbrushing. It comes with a hose and several other accessories for inflating tires, balls, and other things.

I currently have both a single action Badger and a double action Aztek. The Aztek is great when it doesn't leak, which mine does on a regular basis, it may just be a duff seal somewhere but can't trace the problem. The Badger however seems to be 'bullet proof' other than a new sealing ring for the head had no problems at all. Had no dealings with Iwata myself but they do seem popular on the forum.

Aztek (aka testors, model master) are decent. Its easy to clean and parts are inexpensive. It does look and feel cheap however.
Iwatas (also tamiya) are the best; very high quality. If this is going to be your first, I also recommend the Revolution. I use mine to spray acrylic only as I find enamels are more difficult to clean off.

Well i went to the store today to check the prices and the info. The Tamiya one is a Badger 250II which costs 40 bucks and comes with a can. There were 3 different Aztek ones. The 220, 270, and 320. The 220 i think was 40, 320 was 60, and 270 was 50. Which do you guys think i should get. I have come to realize that since im a newbie to all of this paint stuff that i should get a cheap one first then move to heavy machinery, lol. Thats why i need some info on these 4 Airbrush's since they are the cheap ones and only ones i see around here, lol.

"BB Rich" is the OEM manufacturer of many quality Japanese airbrushes, that includes Tamiya, Olympic and Mr Hobby (Gunze Sangyo) series of airbrushes.
"BB Rich" itself is hardly known but I managed to get a 0.3mm nozzle airbrush from this company and it is as good as most (if not better) branded airbrushes of this spec., at SGD$130, which is about USD$77.
I have another airbrush which is Tamiya's 0.2mm precision airbrush. Anyway, if you take a good reading at its instruction sheet, it says made by BB Rich Japan. :smokin:
Buying a good airbrush is not the end of the story. It doesn't make much sense if you will have a hard time getting servicing or spare parts from your local hobby dealer.
As for me, I have the habit of stocking up on spare airbrush needles, just in case.
In my personal opinion, I will always prefer a full metal airbrush than one that is a combination of metal and resin parts. I think Badger airbrushes are pretty decent. As for Aztek's, I just don't fancy some of the parts like the trigger being not metal(?). Btw, Aztek airbrushes are not cheap man!
Curious! I'd like to know if Aztek airbrushes are good and easy to maintain?

Astek don't even come close to the quality of Badger. So I go with Tamiya (which are made by Iwata and known to be the best)

I have two Paasches and one Aztek A470. I wouldn't slap a dead dog in the ass with the Aztek.
Seriously, the Paasche is near bulletproof and will take ten tons of abuse. It sprays well, and is very solid and robust. The Iwata/Tamiya's may have it beat for fine detailing, but I'll gladly trade precise and finicky for even and beefy.

:evillol:
Most of the other brand are better than Aztek/Testor. Paasche, Badger, Devilbiss (sorry, can't find them anymore... was not bad though), Thayer&Chandler, Iwata, Tamiya... Sincerely, a friend who happened to have a hobbyshop want me to have one Aztek (a430) so I can test it and tell the people what a good airbrush it is... well, now it's collecting dust ! Don't get me wrong here, it's spraying paint and that's what an Airbrush should do and maybe the Aztek is nice enough for you. If so, don't try anything else or you'll end up like most of us...
That should shake things up for Aztek representant in this forum. :evillol: ...sorry ! I have to say it's pretty rough but it's my :2cents:

Well i heard that the Iwata HP-BC2 or something like that was really good for drawing/details which is basically what i want. I want an airbrush that could draw lines really thin and reach small places which you can't do with spray paint. yea I have the exact same model.. not bad (better that really cheap one) They are in sell on ebay for about 10$. Just sad you paid 40$ for this when you can have badger airbrush for 50$.. well..
The paints are acrilyc. quite ok, but they all come flat. so you will need clear coat. I have made few car with it with good result (beside the first one)
Also, I think the kit come with aircan.. Mine didn't even last for 1 model. you need to have a compressor, or it will cost you more than spray paint.
The nozzle of my A370 died after 6 or 7 use.. DON'T USE ENAMEL OR LACQUER PAINT WITH THIS AIRBRUSH. you will melt the plastic nozzle when cleaning it with thinner. I learned it the hard way. only acrilyc or you will have to buy a 9.99$ nozzle every 2 or 3 time you use it.

10 dollars! Wow this has to be one of the stupidest buy i have ever done. I saw a Tamiya Badger airbrush in a shop for 30 also but it looked a bit old. But wow 10 dollars, too bad i threw all the boxes away.
I tested mine and it seemed good, i cleaned it with some Testors Airbrush Thinner afterwards. The nozzle sounds a bit weak. Do they sell different nozzles for this particular model?
I should've bought the Tamiya one :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Ok, tomorrow morning i will try to return the Testors airbrush and buy the Tamiya one. Just one quick question, i bought the Testors Airbrush Thinner for Enamels...Could i use it to thin Tamiya bottled paints which i think are acrylics. Or should i get the tamiya thinner? What kind of thinner works best for tamiya paints?

no enamel thinner will not work with acrylic paint.
For Enamel, go to your hardware store, you will get a 4 gallon enamel thinner for about 3$. work well with testor enamel, humbrol and other. don't buy testor thinner, way too expensive for nothing.
For Lacquer, you can have a 1 Gallon thinner for about the same price. work nice with Modelmaster Metallizer and others.
For Tamiya.. Well I didn't found any subtitute for "mixing the paint" but for cleaning your airbrush, you can use Windex window cleaner.. work very great (be sure to use a mask, paper or respirator) cause the smell is terrific.
As for the Nozzle, there is 3 nozzle that "fit" the A370.. look in your instruction sheet, in the order parts. they are 9.99$ + 10$ of shipping (expensive imo)
at 40$ it's not a very bad deal becose you have lot of paint (at 1$ each, it make it a bit more worth it) but I wasn't impressed with this kit. I paid 59$Cnd more than 1 year ago.
If you want a good cheap airbrush, at your hardware store (home depot in my city or Reno-depo) there is a small campbell hausfeld airbrush, which is the same as a Badger. for about 36$
I got my Badger Anthem 155-7 for 51$ on ebay brand new and I'm in love with it (aztek look like a toy when you compare it). I started to love airbrush with the badger, not aztek

at 40$ it's not a very bad deal becose you have lot of paint (at 1$ each, it make it a bit more worth it) but I wasn't impressed with this kit.
Ohh, So for Tamiya Acrylic's normal thinner will work good?
Thanks for all the information,
In the future i will like to own an Iwata Custom Micron, i heard they are good. With the price it has it should damn right be good

Ok, i bought the Tamiya-Badger 250II. What do you guys think about this airbrush. Looks better to me than the testors one. Feels like an airbrush not like a plastic toy. How do i thin Tamiya Acrylic paints. I bought some Tamiya Acrylic Thinner. A little more paint than thinner?

What the hell is that ?!?!?! Never even seen this before (not by tamiya nor by Badger)
It's a single action external mix. the Aztek a370 was a dual action internal mix.. You didn't get better at all sorry (when you were talking about tamiya, I was sure you were talking about the real one made by iwata)
Are you sure a370 was the model you had before ?
it look like this: (didn't found any better picture)

this thing look like a toy, but at least it's a dual action internal mix !

after few search, what you have there is a Badger model 250. it sell for less than 10$ on ebay and less than 23$ in store.
as for the tamiya thinning, about 1:1 for me work great, but since you have an external mix, you will have to try it yourself.

Well over here is another anthem supporter. Vric sensed me into buying a badger anthem. It might have been the best piece of advice I have gotten. The brush is so nice and it sprays, cleans and feels very very nice. Im in love with it. For spraying thin lines the best I can get is 5 millimeters. so it isnt great for that but I figure when would you ever need anything smaller? it sprays crevices just fine so no problem. Best of all is the universal nozzle which you do not have do change for different spray widths.
I picked mine up at dixeart and got it in a week(live in chicago). I would definatly reccomend them.
As for thining paints, try to stick with the brand of paint your thinning. ie; Tamiya acrylics:Tamiya Thinner, Testors Enamel:Testors enamel thinner. I thin at a ratio of 2 parts paint 1 part thinner. I dont use pipets to measure just simply eyeball it. I have never tried Vric's 1:1 but with his advice im more than sure it works. I have sprayed tamiya acrylics unthinned with no problem though. (The main reason for thinning is to save paint). Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice StephenDeli,
I just got back from the hobby shop and returned that Tamiya-Badger 250II. Thank god i received a full refund. My dad is now leaning towards buying me an Iwata
For the Custom Micron where is the best place to buy it at. I saw it at Pearl Paint for 367$ and that is quite expensive and i was looking to see if anyone knew a site that sells them cheaper. I want an airbrush for painting models, drawing, and painting on T-shirts. You guys tell me what i should get. By now i have given up on my own.

glad you like your anthem Steph.
For tamiya, I only tryed once yet. and I did about 1:1 (I go with the eye too) I use tamiya thinner to mix and Windex to clean the airbrush. I painted a computer case with x-11. worked very nice.
For Testor Enamel, I use 1:1 too. I use the enamel thinner from hardware store.. it's the exact same thing as testor.. no need to pay 4$ for 350ml when you can get 4 gallon for the same price.
So far, I like working with enamel more than Acrylic (only lacquer paint I have is Alclad and modelmaster Metallizer, love them too)
The best airbrush are Iwata (and tamiya), but I think Badger Anthem 155 is the best airbrush for the price.. everyone that tried it love it. Those are professional tools, not toys (and for 50$-70$, it's really not that expensive considering it will last many years)
So get a Badger Anthem (67$) or Badger 360 (94$) or a Iwata CR (59$+hose) or BCR (siphon or gravity..)(69$) (you can get cheaper on ebay) (badger come with more accessories than Anthem, so are a bit cheaper)
btw Stephen, at what PSI are you working ? I had best result at 7-15psi max.. quite strange since all the tutorial I have seen recommande 15-30psi (I was working at 25psi with my aztek, but the anthem simply feel more sensitive)

I think the Custom Micron is overkill. Why spend $350 on the Micron right now when you can get something like the Iwata HP-C thats been out for a while but is about $100-$120? Wait about a year, the CM-C will be about $200 instead of $350.

Yea that makes sense. Maybe i will head towards the HP-BC2 for drawing and in the future buy an Anthem for my models. I also have to buy a compressor :banghead:
Any suggestions on any compressors that are great for the price.
Thanks everyone!

wow.. you buy a 10$ airbrush and 2 hours laters, you have more money to put on a airbrush than I put on modelling in one year :D
as for a compressor, I have a 1.5Hp 2 Gallon 110psi that I found at hardware store (cost 99$) and I added a moisture trap (15$)
btw the logic would be to get an anthem before a Iwata (if you really want 2) once you get good with the badger, and IF you feel you need better, then you could look at a 140$ Iwata

Harbor Freight Tools have some very nice and inexpensive aircompressors.
I agree with Vric on getting the Badger before the Iwata. The anthem can do more than you think. It would be perfect for t-shirts, but like I stated before it might not be up to snuff on hairline thin lines for drawing.
I seriously hope you dont go broke here on just an airbrush. You bought the two cheap ones and your planning on an anthem, HP-BC2, and a compressor. This whole airbrush dealy could easily run you over 350$. Adding to that you have not bought paint. Tack on another 50. Wish I had that much money...

I've used an Aztek A470 (died once, replaced free of charge, inc. shipping in under 3 days, new tip sent FOC also) for about 5 years now. Love it. I use a Badger "Silent Air" a/c I got free. Love it!
What and how I thin Tamiya acrylics depends on what I'm painting. If it's a flat or semigloss color, I use 70% IPA. If it's a gloss color I use Tamiya thinner. I clean up with cheap, cheap Dollar Store "window cleaner"...smells like blue ammonia, cleans like a sumbich! ;-)>
I thin 1:1 for the first coats, which helps the paint cover quickly and then add thinner to the paint on subsequent coats, which helps the paint self-level and smooth out. I cover all Tamiya acrylics in either Future (for a gloss finish) or Model Master's flat or semi-gloss lacquer...
hth,
Bill

I have two Testors Aztek airbrushes, A320 and A220. The 320 is my primary choice. I have a friend that uses the A220 exclusively. It is Testors cheapest airbrush. He used to paint 1:1 cars for a living so technique has something to do with it. Here's a pic of the 220
http://www.testors.com/tes_cds/catalog_img_std/A2203.JPG
He jokingly refers to the 220 as a "garden hose" because it lays down heavier coats of paint similar to rattle cans. He has won several "Best Paint" awards with this airbrush.
Proof you don't need to spend big bucks on an airbrush.

If you get the 155-7 anthem set(which I did) make sure to buy another glass jar or two because laquer thinner ate through the plastic cups and was pretty nasty.

Totally agree with all the above... Iwata Micron is for poeple who live with their Airbrush (Bodypainters, fine artist, bikes design, custom car painters with tiny details...), I don't see the reason to own such an Airbrush to do modeling !
I use the 155 Anthem and the 360 Universal for modeling and it's quite enough. By the way, don't buy both since they are almost the same except for the front of the 360 that can be swiveled up or down to have a top feed (gravity) or a bottom feed. Which is a nice function to have if you want to do mosaïc, fresk or fine art with it.
For the compressor, I use a big 6hp with a tank of 26Gallons (Campbell Hausfeld) which I can use with airtools and airbrushes... (I can have a feeders to put up to 5 working airbrushes at the same time but it's kind of overkill to do modeling). The thing I like with such a big tank is that I can shoot half an hour (almost nonstop) wihtout the motor starting... then it's start for 30 sec and I have another half hour. The second thing I like about that setup is the freedom it gives me... I can work on my real cars (or other cars... or bikes, or anything that can be paint with a Spray gun (even a beer freezer... from sandblasting to paint)...) with this compressor.
Drawback: it's not quiet at all, but since I'm far from the neighbor it wasn't an issue. Or else, you can have a little quietter compressor that will run all the time you shoot (my friend have one, you can't tell when it's working, so quiet)... it for you. For me, the choice was simple but you have to make your own choices.
Ps: the last 2 line of Vric are telling a lot !

Then again watch out for them home depot compressors. Make sure you buy one with a resivoir otherwise you will not get constant air. Those 125psi compressors are like that unless they have a tank.
