I realize that there was a big long thread about airbrushes with many replies of how crappy Testors airbrushes are. Most of airbrushing, or any painting for that matter, has as much to do with technique as it does equipment. This model below was painted by a buddy of mine with the cheapest external mix Testors airbrush you can get.
http://images6.fotki.com/v98/photos/2/224343/1213006/DSC00041-vi.jpg?1091999096
He uses HOK paints and automotive urethane clear. Believe it or not, he rarely has to polish any of his models. He is able to paint with virtually no texture or orange peel. He used to paint 1:1 cars for a living.
Here's another of his models:
http://images6.fotki.com/v96/photos/2/224343/1213006/DSC00038-vi.jpg?1091999057
http://images5.fotki.com/v81/photos/2/224343/1098282/DSC00013-vi.jpg?1088907371
His paint is nothing short of amazing. I also have two Testors airbrushes, one of the cheapies and an Aztek A320 single action internal mix. I like the A320 much more than the cheapie but I use it more.
I have also seen great paint jobs straight out of a can of Testors. You can spend big bucks on an airbrush but it will not guarantee a great finish.
The December 2004 issue of Scale Auto has a buyers guide on single action airbrushes. The next issue will cover dual action airbrushes.
I say buy the Testors and learn how to use it. They are easy to use and easy to maintain. Use it awhile before you spend big $$$ on something else.

Testors ?? Use a straw (McCain juice box: 99$) and a blower (35$) and you'll be on your way. Don't waste precious money to deal with Airbrushes that are toys. If you buy something, go for something that worth it.
Go see the thread Vric send... there's a long story about that.

Huuuum, That could help a little don't you think ??? :evillol:
Maybe Testors have nothing to do with his results.
And look at all those boxes... is it a hobby store ??!! Maybe the guy who did those cars have 30 years of experience and maybe he can spray decent paint with a windex spraying bottle. So don't count on Testors to give you this finish, the guy is already a pro. :2cents:

Okiemodelbuilder: Your friend's paints look awesome!!! Technique is always very important. But i gotta admit sometimes expensive stuff do give you what you paid for.
On the other hand,
I painted my two new models that just arrived from HLJ with my airbrush. I decided to drain some Dupli Color Honda Artic Silver Metallic. Did it the easy way, take a straw and spray through it onto a little cup. At first the mist coats went on perfect! But then out of no where i started getting little debris. Im not sure if it came from the airbrush or from outside since i was painting outside. What might it have been? The paint was incredibly thinned straight out of the can, so that wouldn't have anything to do with it.(I guess)
:p
Also bought some Klean Strip Lacquer Thinner< Smells like sh*t
PS:I am thinking about buying the Crown Cap; What good does it do?

Agree with above... dirt !
The crown cap is certainly the nozzle with the crown like design. It's supposed to give you greater control of the spray, finer atomisation and finner line spray if I'm not mistaken. I don't know what price is this item but if not too pricy, go for it and give us your impression. I think you'll have a slight improvement but it won't change your Airbrush from top to bottom. Iwata is still Iwata ! Best is the best and I think modeling don't need a such precise killing machine. If you have other uses in your head for this airbrush (fine art) then it defenetely worth it. Or else, you're trying to kill a ladybug with an ERMA SR100 (*snipper riffle) in a 10 foot range buddy !

Yea, I'll check up on the price and if my dad buys it for me then i'll get it. Lol, I use my airbrush for art also. Have done already 3 Tee shirts with graffiti on them for some fellow friends and for some car drawings. I believe Chip Foose uses an Iwata also since the nozzle/cap of his looked like the one Iwata's use when they showed him in Overhaulin. But his is gravity feed...Man i want a gravity feed airbrush now.
Is Campbell Hausfeld a good brand for spray guns because i saw some very cheap priced spray guns by them in Walmart.
I need a spray booth.
I could go on and on and on and on, on all the things i want/need!

Well i went today to the art store. I bought a 1oz bottle for my Iwata but also found out that the Paasche VL 1/4oz. Metal Color Cup is compatible to my Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS. To verify this there was actually someone working in the store with the same exact airbrush as me and the VL Color Cup on it. Unfortunately they were out of stock on the VL Color Cups so tomorrow i'll go to the other art store hoping to find one. This color cup is very different. Its almost like gravity feed, very cool.
The Metal Color Cup is the one all the way to the left.

I don't really think Campbell & H. is a fine Spary gun (let say medium quality) but it always depend on what you're going to do with it. Almost all my airtools are from them (C&H) and they do what they're supposed to but they aren't pro tools (Magtools and so on are far better)...
My Spray Gun is from Devilbiss and if you're going to do some automotive 1:1 paint, I couldn't recommendent it enough. It's a nice tool to work with and  it's gravity feed  . Go for the "PLUS" Spray Gun which is the topline of the Spray Gun... it's like the IWATA Micron of the Spray Gun... I know you know what I mean ! But there's a price to pay to hold technoligie and craftmanship in a single package.
For the little metal cup, when I work with my Anthem (Badger 155), I always work with this kind of cup. A good little gizmo that can be charged while you're spraying offering you the capacity to blend colors while spraying. You'll love it for sure but don't think this will transform your Iwata into a Top (Gravity) Feed because it's not. Poor choice for a body though since you'll have to recharge quite often. :uhoh:

The Campbell & Hausfeld airbrush (there is only one airbrush) it a rebadged Badger 150. It can be found lower than 39$. not a bad airbrush, but for that price, I prefer a 155 Anthem for 11$ more
Also, the biguest thing that turn me off buying it was the replacement part. the Nozzle cost near 30$ itselft ! while the Anthem is near 5$. It's way cheaper if you have a problem.

Well, I don't have this exact Airbrush but I have a Badger 350... which is the exact same design than the one you're asking about.
First of all, it's a single action, external mixt Airbrush. Is that what you want ?? There's a lot of info on this in this thread on what is a single action so back to start and read I won't explain again but if you have any more questions, I'll be there to answer.
This partucular kind of Airbrush let you pulverise heavy material... like unthinned paint (or unproper thinned paint) or any high viscosity paint. You can easely spray unthinned Tamiya Acrylics with this and get away with a pretty cool job because it can have a large spray patern if you change the tip to a large tip. There's 3 tip... Fine (it can be pretty fine), Medium and Large (quite large). But if you're too close you'll have running paint because it's a high volume spray.
Downsides are... they aren't Double-action so you don't have all the controls on the airbrush which can be a pain sometime. Double-Action are the best Airbrush around and any Single-Action won't stand a comparaison against them. D-A are versatile and easy to work with, the brain learn to associate the trigger with it's use and you control the parameter of the spray patern and pressure with no stop in the paint process. You can go from a little fine line to a bigger, larger spray just by pulling the trigger. You can't do this with a S-A. You'll have to stop the spraying, turn the tip try, then if the tip is too Fine, you'll have to unscrew this tip and change it for another larger tip... it's quite a pain and it'll lead to cleaning....... Haaaa cleaning.... :disappoin MAJOR DOWNSIDE :disappoin .... cleaning the 350 is a real pain. You think the Double-Action with the cup forged to the body is a pain to clean... try cleaning a 350 or any Airbrush with that design.

humm, if you want to paint anything beside the body, a dual-action airbrush is a must.
If you want to spray only the body, a single action is fine.
Also external mixt isn't the best. for 46$, it's a very bad buy (I got my Anthem, dual action, internal mixt and full metal, for 51$)

My bodies are done with D-A... much easier to do retouch and go in those little corner without paint running everywhere !
PS... let's not forget the pain of cleaning the "350 Type" !!! Only this is worth at least 20$ more ! :lol2:

You think the Double-Action with the cup forged to the body is a pain to clean... try cleaning a 350 or any Airbrush with that design.
thanks for the info

Huuummm, Both seem pretty similar ! The only difference I see is the swivel connector and beside the fact that it's a must... does it really worth 10$us ?? But... they are both Double-Action... you're getting better Lancer07 !!! :iceslolan
Hooo, I see the Single-action prophets burning here... :evillol:

I just found out my friend owns several Paasche VL/VLS. And his art is amazing, he tells me that the Paasche is good and well worth it eventhough he hasn't bought anything other than the Paasche's he has. If i was you i would aim for the Iwata Revolution CR. Very cheap and its an Iwata:) Im really happy with the way my Iwata performs.

Hi Joeham...
Imola EK ??? What the EK stand for ??
I think that Paasche is a good airbrush brand and the fact that they are one of the oldest brand (not the oldest but one of.... the Walkup guys never really have a definitive company name, changing with the ages and depending of the wind...) is there to help them. Their quality is better than average, they have the "know how" and they seem to work well. I never try one but if my friend from the hobbyshop ask my to try one, I'll be happy to do it.

Haaaa, I didn't know that... is it why their motor are named K16 and so on... if so, what have they done with the E in the configuration ??
Or is it more a body and chassis thing (like the F-body or the J-body from GM) ?? Or like the Mk1, 2,3,4 and now 5 in the Volkswagen Golf setup ??
For the thread and for my curiosity... do you spray everything with your Iwata (interior, body and motor)???

, Sorry it took soo long for me to respond. My computer had terrible virus. The Civics do have a meaning for their codes, engine does have something to do with them also. For example EJ8 Civic have D16Y8 and EJ6 have D16Y7(non-Vtec) There is a site which sums alot of stuff up which i have forgotten but if i find i'll post it.
I did once spray the body of an integra with an airbrush but decided to continue the process with the rattle can since i had drained the paint from it to airbrush it. Interior's i find to be easier to do with airbrush's but i haven't done a motor with my airbrush yet, and that has a reason behind it...
I screwed up my airbrush.:banghead: I used some of that Testors Acrylic "Airbrush Ready" paints and it clogged up my Iwata soo fast! Now my Iwata skips when i pull the trigger to spray. I might take it this weekend to get it checked to see whats wrong. I have been spraying paint thinner through it for 3 days in a row and soo much paint has come out but now it seems like there is no more paint to be taken out and it still skips. My last option would be that the nozzle is cracked which it does not seem like it is. I've decided to stop messing with it and take it to the pro's so they could see it in person. Worst comes to worst I will buy another one.

I was using acrylic before (when I had an Aztek) but since I have my badger, I start to hate this paint. Not work that great and harder to clean (you need lacquer thinner to fully clean the airbrush)
Tamiya Acrylic is easyer than real acrylic.

Yea Tamiya Acrylic was easier to use than that testors one which i never got to clean right. Chunks of paint were coming out of my nozzle. This gives me another reason to hate Testors. Im scared of using their Metalizer :uhoh:

Hey guys my mother just told me that i could get another airbrush for christmas. Im thinking about a finer airbrush. I just saw in DixieArt.com that they recommend the Badger 100G for fine tip for fine detali, its only 60 bucks...Is that really worth it http://www.dixieart.com/Badger100.html. They also say that the Badger 150 is good for art also http://www.dixieart.com/Badger_Model_150_Illustration_Airbrush.html
Whats up with those? Im also taking a look at the Iwata HP-B but thats more like a far future buy, Maybe next summer

I don't know for sure what those Badger worth for fine art because I never tried them... so I won't make further allusion on how good they are. But, Badger in general are good but if you're looking for the top airbrush... Iwata Micron is the one (and by the way, it have that Crown tips already on (a pain to clean because it won't allow the back wash)). Or, if you have limited moeny (who dosen't), Tamiya Mag reviewed a Iwata HP-CH+ (I think it was something like that) and it seem (seem, never try it... yet) pretty good. It have a little pressure valve allowing you to fine tune the end pressure at the nozzle which is something I wanna try someday... it's been a while since I bought a new one... maybe it's the time !!! SANTA ???
If you're planning to buy the Badger 360 Universal... don't waste money on the Anthem since they're very close parents... the only difference being the pivoting front end to convert it from bottom feed to top feed (on the 360... that's what the name is for). It's indeed a real good airbrush and one of my personnal favorite.
And sigmaman... welcome to the club man... don't have much to say... Aztec is made by Testor :evillol:

Hey man i just bought a Badger 100SGF which is with the Fine Tip. Got it for 45 dollars on EBAY, i'll let you guys in on how it is. I have also heard about the custom micron b, sb, c, and c plus+. The B and SB come with a 0.18 nozzle!!! the C comes with a 0.23 nozzle though. Yes i see what you mean about the HP-CH which is part of the Hi Line series which features the MAC (Micro Air Control) valve. I was thinking of getting the HP-B or the HP-BH since they bring a 0.2 nozzle. The HP-CH comes with a bigger nozzle, i think 0.3. The Hi Line series for the HP's run around 180 dollars. If i win this art contest im entering which will be 1 thousand dollars i will get one of those, if not then for next summer :cwm27:
PS: I just spotted an auction for 6 Paasche VL Airbrushes for only 200 dollars on EBAY!!! Man oh man! I want them!

That's the main reason for every (Ok, most of em) thread to exist... informations !
Compressors are pretty varied but most of the poeple here (including me) tend to buy quite big compressor with a tank. Every brand I can think of... Campbell Hausfeld, Sears, Coleman, DeWalt, Porter Cable.... (you name it)... look at the best deal in your hardware store. They aren't quiet though and if silence is what you seek, Iwata and other airbrush brand offer little air compressor but most of them will run as long as you shoot which isn't the case with an air compressor with a tank.
Lets be rassured, any compressor is better than those "air cans" and will deliver better performance too. I think my discover of the Airbrush really came when I bought my compressor ! Before, it was a real pain... anyway, I used almost an air can just to clean the thing so it wasn't very productive.

That's where the paint goes... the SG is a extremely fine airbrush and has no real cup but that hole with no cover (that's why I always keep a set of pipette near my "Airbrush Workshop"). No cover is to see how much paint you still have and to blend you color by adding another color while you're airbrushing. It's a gravity feed so the gravity will keep the paint in, but you'll have to work horizontaly. It's design to do illustrations... isn't that what you want ??
It's the same thing with most of the "illustration airbrush"... like the Iwata HP-A for exemple. Those airbrushes are not ment to cover a lot of ground but to work on very fine details so a cup just block your vision in those case plus most of the time you won't spend a lot of paint on fine details so why botter with a cup ?! If you want a cup, you should have the 100G instead which have a 1/16oz cup or a 100 which has a side cup so it let you see what you're doing.
